Job summary

The University of Rochester is seeking a researcher to provide direct support for ongoing lab projects in Hematology/Oncology. You will help design and conduct experiments, train new lab members, and maintain safety and compliance in a fast-paced setting.

You may review data, prepare reports, and assist with manuscript preparation while collaborating with faculty and students. A Bachelor’s degree with lab experience is required; a Master’s is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs theoretical and experimental investigations to acquire new knowledge.
  • Develops lab operating procedures and data collection methods; modifies test methods.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data; assists in manuscript preparation and proposals.
  • Trains lab staff; teaches techniques and safety; orients new lab members.
  • Operates lab equipment; maintains supplies; coordinates routine maintenance with vendors.
  • Keeps abreast of trends by reading journals and attending labs meetings and seminars.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation Range:

$27.16 - $38.03

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Provides direct research and teaching support of moderate complexity and scope in a specialized field. Develops, designs and conducts one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with plan, reviews progress and evaluates results. Responsible for the orientation and training of new lab members in experimental technique methods and safety education, as well as participating in lab meetings and seminars.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques. Develops protocol and criteria. Determines interview procedures and approves protocols. May also design intervention protocols.
  • Performs basic theoretical and experimental scientific and technological investigation directed toward the acquisition of new knowledge.
  • Develops and installs laboratory operating procedures, develops and modifies test methods, selects procedures for data collection and handling, and makes recommendations for any changes.
  • Collects, analyzes, and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of the study. Prepares written reports and graphic representations of experimental data using computer software and assists in writing and editing manuscripts for publication. May assist the faculty researchers in the preparation of research proposals. May also co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences.
  • Trains laboratory staff. Teaches lab techniques and instrumentation procedures to students, postdocs, and technical staff. Counsels on technical problems and advises and assists with special research projects. Orients all new lab members and ensures all health and safety procedures are maintained. May supervise research and support personnel.
  • Operates laboratory and experimental testing equipment and apparatus, including routine lab and equipment maintenance. Organizes laboratory and orders supplies. May maintain contact with outside vendors and technical representatives to coordinate routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by reading professional journals and attends/participates in weekly lab meetings, and, as appropriate, institutes and seminars.
  • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers required
  • Master's degree and experience with tissue culture, primary culture, and/or animal handling preferred
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed required
