Job summary

Hitachi Energy's Raleigh, North Carolina research center seeks a Research Scientist in Power Systems to lead transformative R&D across grid control, simulation, and optimization. You will model dynamic system behavior, explore microgrid control strategies, and collaborate with external partners to push the frontier of energy infrastructure.

The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with power-systems specialization, is fluent in English, and proficient in Python or C++.

How You'll Make an Impact
  • Propose, contribute to and lead R&D projects in power systems and related fields.
  • Collaborate with a global team to identify and solve real-world challenges for our customers.
  • Propose and work on novel ideas and concepts for the next generation of power systems.
  • Network in the company and actively distribute your knowledge and expertise.
  • Collaborate with external partners including universities, startups, and vendors.
  • Disseminate your results in scientific publications, patent applications, and technical reports.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
Your Background
  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Systems.
  • Deep understanding of power system dynamics and associated control mechanisms.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Fluency in common programming languages like Python or C++.
  • Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
Experience preferred at least one of the following:
  • Experience with monitoring and control technologies like SCADA, EMS, or substation automation.
  • Experience implementing and evaluating early-stage control concepts (e.g., simulation, HIL).
  • Proficiency in power system simulation platform like PSS/E, Power Factory, PSCAD/Opal-RT, MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of transmission or distribution control room operations.
  • Techno-economic analysis and optimization.
  • Knowledge of microservice architecture and utility communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of Energy Market operations.
  • Experience with microgrids and active distribution systems.
