Meta Reality Labs brings together researchers and engineers to invent the future of visual computing. Our teams develop technologies that enable people to capture, create, understand, and interact with immersive visual experiences across Meta’s products and AR/VR platforms. We work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computer vision, computer graphics, and computational photography. The AI Maps team develops cutting-edge technologies that serve as the foundation of current and future Meta products. Specifically, our engineering and research teams cover the topics of on-device and cloud-based mapping, localization, scene understanding, and spatial reasoning with a focus on incubating new technologies from research to production while iterating, prototyping, and realizing the developer and user value. As a Research Scientist Intern, you will help advance the state of the art through an ambitious research project. You will collaborate with researchers and engineers to develop new models, representations, datasets, and evaluation methods—with opportunities to publish your work and influence future products used by people around the world.Research Scientist Intern, AI Maps (PhD) Responsibilities:Research, develop and prototype advanced technologies in the domain of Computer Vision and Machine Learning, with specific focuses including spatial reasoning, mapping, and localization.Deliver research results that are both publishable and have a direct impact on Reality Labs or Meta’s Family of Apps.Analyze the efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and stability of currently deployed technologies to identify opportunities for impact through novel research.Collaborate with team members throughout the lifetime of a project, from research to prototyping to deploying products.Minimum Qualifications:Experience in one or more areas of Computer Science, such as Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Computer Graphics, Image Processing, and Computational PhotographyProven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as co-authored publications at top-tier conferencesExperience with modern C++ and/or PythonExperience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorchPreferred Qualifications:Intent to return to their degree program after the completion of the internshipInterpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaborationStrong communication skills and ability to convey research ideas to a broad audienceBroad understanding of the full machine vision pipeline from sensors to high-level algorithmsMathematical background and understanding of linear algebra, numerical optimization, probabilistic estimation, and 3D geometryRelevant research or software engineering work experiences, including internship, work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions in open source repositoriesAbout Meta:Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.Meta is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer.
