Google DeepMind is seeking a Research Scientist to advance the future of Human-AI Interactions at the intersection of AI and HCI. You will shape a forward-looking research agenda, collaborating across disciplines to produce rigorous studies, prototypes, and insights with societal impact.

You will communicate findings to academic peers and the broader public, contributing to publications, demos, and demonstrations.

Qualifications

• PhD in CS, HCI, Cognitive Science, or related field.
• 6 years post-PhD research experience in Human-Centered AI.
• Ability to communicate complex concepts to academic and general audiences.
• Strong publication record in AI, ML, HCI, or social science venues.
• Experience developing prototypes for novel interaction methods (software or hardware).

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a novel research agenda at the intersection of AI and Human-Computer Interaction.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary colleagues within DMI and DeepMind to translate research into impact.
• Design, conduct, and analyze mixed-methods studies involving human subjects.
• Develop artifacts for advancing Human-AI Interactions, including prototypes and novel metrics.
• Communicate findings via publications, whitepapers, talks, blogs, and other media.

Minimum qualifications

• PhD degree in Computer Science, Human-Centered Computing, Cognitive Science, or a related field.
• 6 years post-PhD experience conducting research on topics relating to Human-Centered AI (e.g., postdoctoral work, faculty experience, industrial research, etc.).

Preferred qualifications

• Experience communicating complex scientific concepts to academic and general audiences.
• Deep familiarity with relevant academic literature and commercial innovations in AI, HCI, and related areas.
• Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in venues for AI, ML, HCI, or social science research.
• Proficiency in developing prototypes for exploring novel modes of Human-Computer Interaction (software or hardware).

About The Job

As a research scientist, you will leverage your expertise at the intersection of AI and Human-Computer Interaction to develop and execute a novel research agenda that identifies and explores key topics regarding the future of human interactions with artificial general intelligence, and the likely impacts of such interactions on individuals and society. You will communicate your findings to DeepMind stakeholders, the academic research community, and the general public through appropriate fora such as publication in rigorous peer-reviewed venues, the DMI platform, research symposia, prototypes and demonstrations, and other formats. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary colleagues within DMI and DeepMind as you formulate and execute rigorous, forward-looking research on the future of Human-AI Interactions.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $262000 - $364000 (USD) + 25% bonus target + equity + benefits

• Develop and lead a novel research agenda addressing high-impact questions regarding the future of Human-AI Interactions.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary colleagues from DMI and DeepMind in developing and executing research. Develop relationships with Google's product and policy teams to translate research findings into company and global impact.
• Design, conduct, and analyze mixed-methods studies involving human-subjects, including lab studies, surveys, field experiments, and other appropriate methods for evaluating Human-AI Interactions.
• Develop artifacts for exploring and advancing the future of Human-AI Interactions, including hardware and/or software prototypes, new interaction techniques and interface designs, novel metrics, benchmarks, agents, simulations, and other methods and artifacts for investigating and advancing the field.
• Communicate research findings internally and externally via peer-reviewed scientific publications, whitepapers and tech reports, presentations, keynotes, workshops, blogs, and other media.
