Job Overview

Role Overview: The Web Data Analyst is a professional role within the Innovation Lab. Deals with data collection and web scraping problems independently and has some latitude to solve complex data extraction and parsing issues. Integrates in-depth technical knowledge of web scraping frameworks and methodologies with a solid understanding of data management standards and practices. Good understanding of how the data collection and aggregation team integrates with Senior Analyst teams and other business areas in accomplishing research and investment objectives. Applies analytical thinking and knowledge of data analysis tools, web scraping technologies, and database systems. Requires attention to detail when executing jobs, documenting datasets, and performing data quality validation. Typically deals with variable data structures and public web datasets with potentially broader business and research impact. Applies professional judgment when interpreting and aggregating data and results. Breaks down raw, unstructured web information in a systematic, structured, and communicable manner. Developed communication and coordination skills are required in order to interface with a global team of Data Analysts and exchange complex dataset requirements. Moderate but direct impact through close contact with the business's core investment research activities. Quality and timeliness of data service provided will affect the effectiveness of own team and other closely related analyst teams.

Responsibilities:

• Perform data extraction from major websites, public datasets, and subscription services to identify trends and spot investment opportunities.
• Deliver aggregated data findings and propose new proprietary dataset opportunities that directly impact key research initiatives across the department.
• Act as a point of contact for web scraping queries and interface with global teams of Data Analysts and Senior Analysts to gather requirements.
• Manage multiple data extraction initiatives and scraping jobs simultaneously.
• Part of a truly global team (strategically located in New York and Mumbai) with very experienced stakeholders who will hold you to an exceptionally high standard.
• Act as curator of new datasets, documenting and performing detailed data quality validation and quality checks with a clear understanding of the business context.
• Support, monitor, and maintain scheduled web scraping jobs built out with Python or Kapow to ensure continuous creation of data sets.
• Understand the Citi Research business and its drivers, aligning data collection efforts with financial research goals.
• Perform less structured (scripted), ad-hoc data collection and internet research tasks as necessary, summarizing steps taken and providing post-data aggregation results to stakeholders.
• Appropriately assess risk (including compliance and data usage guidelines) when business decisions and web scraping activities are conducted, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

Qualifications:

• Exceptional attention to detail in validating, documenting, and aggregating datasets.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interface with global partners.
• Ability to execute in a large, matrixed, and global organization.
• Self-starter with the ability to solve complex web scraping and data parsing problems independently.
• Strong execution and time-management skills to work under time constraints and prioritize multiple initiatives.
• 4–6 years of minimum relevant experience in web data extraction, programming, or data analysis tools.
• Proficient in Python and web scraping frameworks, as well as regular expressions, HTML, and JavaScript/jQuery.
• Prior experience with third‑party scraping tools (such as Kapow or Mozenda) and database systems (Oracle or SQL) is highly desirable.
• Highly analytical with a positive work ethic and a passion for or exposure to financial markets.

Education:

• Recognized Bachelor’s degree in any stream (such as IT, Sciences, Commerce, Arts) or equivalent experience.
