Job summary

The University of Minnesota is seeking a Laboratory Research Technician to manage and execute experiments, such as immunohistochemistry, and to analyze results. The role includes routine lab maintenance and supporting a collaborative research environment.

Responsibilities also include mentoring undergraduates, assisting with materials acquisition and storage, and ensuring meticulous documentation of procedures and findings.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least eight years.
  • Demonstrates experience with maintenance and transfection of immortalized cell lines, protein/antibody staining and analysis, cell separation, virus titration and transduction.
  • Demonstrates experience with molecular cloning, transformation, DNA purification, digest verification, PCR, DNA extraction.
  • Demonstrates experience with R Studio, Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro, bioinformatic analysis tools (NCBI, ExPASy, etc.), and Qualtrics.

About the Job

Manage, oversee, and work on experiments (80%)

  • Plan and execute experiments (e.g., immunohistochemistry [IHC])
  • Perform IHC procedures and analyze results

Routine lab maintenance (10%)

  • Clean and maintain the research bench and common work areas

Mentoring undergraduates (5%)

  • Train undergraduate students in basic lab techniques (e.g., mini preps, PCR)
  • Provide supervision and feedback during routine experiments

Materials acquisition and laboratory organization (as needed) (5%)

  • Order reagents and other lab supplies
  • Ensure proper storage and labeling of materials
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least eight years.

Cell Culture:
Demonstrates experience with:

  • Maintenance and transfection (DNA, mRNA, protein) of immortalized cell lines
  • Protein/antibody staining and analysis (extra- and intracellular)
  • Cell separation and isolation
  • Virus titration and transduction

Molecular:
Demonstrates experience with:

  • Molecular cloning
  • Transformation
  • DNA purification
  • Digest verification
  • PCR
  • DNA extraction

Computer:
Demonstrates experience with:

  • R Studio
  • Microsoft Office
  • FileMaker Pro

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $54,000 - $64,000/year; depending on education/qualifications/experience
