We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the laboratory of Dr. JayBrito Querido in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University ofMichigan Medical School. The lab uses cryo-electron microscopy and biochemicalapproaches to investigate the regulation of mRNA translation initiation and itsimplications for human health and disease.
The primary responsibility of the Postdoctoral Scientist will be to leadresearch focused on understanding the mechanism of mRNA translation inapicomplexan parasites. The successful candidate will apply a range ofstructural and biochemical approaches, including single-particle cryo-electronmicroscopy (cryoEM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryoET), to dissect themechanisms of translation initiation and its regulation in these organisms. Thisposition offers access to state-of-the-art instrumentation available through theLife Sciences Institute and the Department of Biological Chemistry, includingthe Stellaris 5 Cryo-Confocal Microscope, Aquilos 2 cryo-FIB, and Titan KriosG4i.
The candidate will be expected to engage actively in lab seminars anddiscussions, contribute to the direction of their own project and to otherongoing work in the group, assist in the training of lab members, andparticipate in the preparation of research publications. All work must beconducted in compliance with institutional and funding agency guidelines andaccording to best research practices.
PhD in biological sciences or related field with at least 2-3 years oflaboratory research experience. The ability to work productively in a teamenvironment with people from diverse backgrounds, work with limited supervisionto identify a broad range of techniques to achieve the project's primary goal.The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to multi-taskefficiently, work independently and be committed to research. Some evening andweekend work may be required.
