Job summary

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. seeks a Research Engineer to explore innovative applications, write product specs, and develop technical reports.

You will analyze competitors, maintain up-to-date SEL product knowledge, and contribute to IP filings while traveling up to 25% to engage with customers and teams. The role requires strong technical training, MATLAB/Simulink proficiency, and deep knowledge of power systems, protection, and stability.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years' experience in at least one listed area (power systems, utility automation, comms, DSP, data analytics).
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Research and document new ideas; draft product specifications.
  • Develop application notes, white papers, and technical reports.
  • Conduct competitive product analysis.
  • Maintain knowledge of SEL products and industry trends.
  • Protect IP by writing patent/copyright apps.

Job description

Primary Responsibilities:Research and document new ideas and write new product specifications.Develop application notes, white papers, technical reports, and conference and journal papers on innovative applications or ideas.Conduct competitive product analysis.Maintain a working knowledge of SEL products or solutions and a perspective of industry practices/trends.Protect SEL Intellectual Property by writing patent and copyright applications.Required Qualifications:B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related or equivalent experience2+ years' working knowledge of at least one of the following:- Electric power systems and practices and philosophies- Utility automation and control systems- Utility grade communication schemes- Digital signal processing practices- Statistical analysis and data analytic techniquesExcellent technical training skillsExperience with simulation software to analyze power system transients, load flow, and short circuit studiesKnowledge of power system analysis, power system protection and power system stabilityExperience with analytical tool (Matlab, Simulink, etc)Willing to travel 25%Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skillsPreferred QualificationsCross-disciplinary knowledge of:Electric power systems and practices and philosophiesUtility automation and control systemsUtility grade communication schemesDigital signal processing practicesLocationPullman, WA - SEL corporate office is located in Eastern Washington where you'll enjoy an unmatched quality of life. Our compensation ranges are based on the responsibilities of the role. Starting pay is determined individually and considers factors such as relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and training. Candidates may be considered at different levels based on their background.
