Job summary

University of Texas Marine Science Institute seeks a Research Engineering / Scientist Associate I to support the MAR SWMP program through field sampling, equipment maintenance, and data handling. The role requires travel within Texas and occasional out-of-state training.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting instruments, lab prep, data submission, and supervising interns, with a focus on reliability and safety in harsh field conditions. Strong technical and organizational skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, technical, mechanical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and perform basic fieldwork requiring lifting, pushing and pulling of heavy objects.
  • Ability and flexibility to work long and/or irregular hours.
  • Ability and comfortability to work in both a field and laboratory setting.
  • Ability and comfortability to swim.
  • Self-directed and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to conduct basic internet/literature searches.
  • Ability to travel within the state and region for work on a regular basis.
  • Ability to travel to a week-long annual training, out-of-state
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft 365 Suite) and knowledge of basic data management.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, clean, calibrate, deploy and retrieve scientific equipment; service water quality and weather station equipment on a weekly, bi-weekly and/or monthly basis; maintain and repair SWMP station infrastructure and in situ instrumentation; coordinate and perform research activities related to sample collection; operate vessels in shallow water conditions along the Texas Coastal Bend, including trailering vessels
  • Laboratory preparation and analysis of field samples
  • Retrieve and submit SWMP raw data; QA/QC data checks and metadata submissions
  • Maintain an organized and clean working environment; manage equipment inventory and supplies
  • Training and supervision of interns, students and volunteers in support of SWMP and MAR programs
  • Assist in MAR program activities across sectors
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Annual week-long training for NERR SWMP technicians (out of state, fully funded)
