Job summary

Thomson Reuters Labs is seeking a Research Engineer to apply AI and ML to build data-driven capabilities that transform how legal, tax, accounting, and government professionals work worldwide. You will join a global interdisciplinary team and develop products that delight customers.

As a Research Engineer, you will design and deliver scalable ML solutions, build data processing pipelines, and collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in computer science or related field.
  • 2+ years software engineering, ML/NLP experience.
  • Strong Python development skills and ecosystems.
  • Ability to deploy ML capabilities into systems.
  • Familiar with Python data science stack (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, etc.).
  • Commitment to clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt to new tech and problems.
  • Understanding of probabilistic models and ML math basics.
  • Automation, monitoring, and cloud-native apps; AWS/Azure familiarity.
  • Experience with NLP tasks: NER, Information Extraction, Retrieval.
  • Ability to bridge research and engineering practices.

About the Role

In this opportunity as aResearchEngineer, you will:

  • Develop and Deliver:Applying modern software development practices, you will be involved in the entire software development lifecycle, designing, building,testingand delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Build Scalable ML Solutions:You will create large scale data processing pipelines to help researchers build and train novel machine learning algorithms. You willdevelophigh performing scalablesystems in the context of large online delivery environments.

About You
  • ABachelor of Sciencedegree, computerscienceor related field
  • At least2years software engineering experience, ideally in the context of machine learning and natural language processing
  • Experience andunderstanding ofPython software development stacksand ecosystems, ideally also experience with other programming languages and ecosystems.
  • Ability to understand, apply,integrateand deploy Machine Learning capabilities and techniques into other systems.
  • Familiarity with the Python data science stack through exposure to libraries such asNumpy,Scipy, Pandas,Dask,spaCy, NLTK, scikit-learn
  • Take pride in writing clean, reusable, maintainable and well-tested code
  • A desire to learn and embrace new and emerging technology
  • Familiarity with probabilistic models andunderstandthe mathematical concepts underlying machine learning methods
  • Proficiencyin automation, system monitoring, and cloud-native applications, with familiarity in AWS or Azure (or a related cloud platform)
  • Previousexposure to Natural Language Processing (NLP) problems andhavefamiliarity with key tasks such as Named Entity Recognition (NER), Information Extraction, Information Retrieval, etc.
  • Ability to understand and translate between language and methodologies used both in research and engineering fields
  • Ability to take and integrate Machine Learning solutions to production-grade software

The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $101,600 USD - $188,700 USD.For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $88,200 USD - $163,800 USD.For Ontario, Canada, the base compensation range for this role is $80,000 CAD - $100,000 CAD.Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
