Job summary

ITW Hartness invites students to join its Summer 2027 R&D Engineering Intern program at the Greenville, SC headquarters. You will gain hands-on design experience in automation equipment, using CAD software, and collaborating with a team in an office/workshop setting.

You’ll visit customer sites, network with other departments and leaders, and benefit from a 100% tuition reimbursement program for those who qualify.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (accredited university).
• Exposure to CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and basic engineering concepts.

Responsibilities

• Assist with mechanical design of automation equipment.
• Create CAD drawings for manufacturing and assembly.
• Support project execution from concept to prototyping and testing.
• Collaborate with team to understand customer or R&D requirements.
• Contribute to process improvement and cost reduction initiatives.

Job Description:

ITW Hartness is looking for a Summer 2027 Research & Development (R&D) Engineering Intern. The R&D Intern position is for candidates interested in developing their skill set in the design of automation equipment. This position involves the use of CAD design software and learning manufacturing standards that govern machine design. A successful candidate must be comfortable working with a team in an office environment and performing hands-on work.

ITW Hartness is proud to offer a robust summer internship program. While an intern, here you will have the opportunity to visit customer sites to see our product in action, while also networking with other departments and company leadership. You will also have the opportunity to meet interns from other divisions and tour other ITW businesses.

This position will be based at our headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina.

What you will do:

• Obtaining mechanical engineering design and hands‑on experience creating world‑class secondary packaging equipment by understanding and assisting with the execution of a customer or R&D project.
• Design automation equipment utilizing CAD software.
• Create drawings for manufacturing and assembly of machine centers.
• Design tools or structures to aid in the manufacturing process.
• Become familiar with business process and product improvement skills and use those tools to innovate, reduce costs, optimize processes, and develop solutions for our customers.

Job Requirements:

• Actively pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
• Exposure to AutoCad and Solidworks
• Ability to work alone and with others to develop new concepts and solve problems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient with common Microsoft office suite programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
• Have a methodical and logical mindset thought process to perform root cause analysis.
