Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Research Computing Software Engineer (Platform Observability) based in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to build and operate the observability foundation behind high-performance and cloud-native computing environments. You will work across DevSecOps, infrastructure automation, CI/CD, container orchestration, and platform reliability. Your work will strengthen the monitoring, logging, tracing, and alerting capabilities that keep critical research platforms secure and dependable. You will collaborate closely with Agile teams to identify risks, solve complex technical challenges, and deliver resilient infrastructure solutions. The environment combines advanced computing, secure systems, and mission-driven research supporting demanding scientific and engineering applications. You will have opportunities to demonstrate your work, contribute to technical decisions, and continuously improve platform operations. The position is based in State College, Pennsylvania, with hybrid flexibility potentially available depending on project requirements.

Accountabilities:
  • Design and implement secure, automated infrastructure solutions for high-performance computing environments using Agile software development practices.
  • Build, operate, and improve observability infrastructure across metrics, logging, and distributed tracing, including dashboards, actionable alerts, and system health and performance monitoring.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor CI/CD pipelines that enable frequent, reliable deployments of infrastructure code.
  • Deploy and operate workloads across container orchestration environments, including bare-metal and cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Apply DevSecOps practices to Linux-based infrastructure, automation, configuration management, and system administration.
  • Contribute to pull request reviews, unit testing, technical documentation, and other software quality activities.
  • Demonstrate completed solutions and technical capabilities to internal teams and, when appropriate, external customers.
  • Partner with Agile team members to identify project risks, issues, requirements, and technical solutions on an ongoing basis.
  • Support platform reliability through observability practices, performance monitoring, incident response readiness, and continuous operational improvement.
Requirements:
  • Associate degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; alternatively, a bachelor’s degree may qualify for the professional-level position with relevant experience accepted in lieu of education.
  • Experience with DevSecOps tools and practices, Linux infrastructure, and system administration.
  • Experience developing infrastructure automation using configuration management and scripting tools.
  • Knowledge of continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline development and deployment practices.
  • Familiarity with container orchestration and a strong interest in cloud-native technologies.
  • Understanding of observability principles, including the collection and analysis of metrics, logs, and traces.
  • Experience with observability platforms such as monitoring and metrics systems, log aggregation, distributed tracing, dashboards, and alerting tools is preferred.
  • Familiarity with service-level indicators (SLIs), service-level objectives (SLOs), on-call practices, and incident response is a plus.
  • Experience with container orchestration at scale and public, private, or hybrid cloud environments is preferred.
  • Knowledge of distributed version control, configuration management, and containerization is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within Agile teams.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain a government security clearance; successful completion of required background checks and applicable drug testing is also required.
  • Ability to work in a secure environment involving Unclassified, Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), and Classified information, including compliance with applicable electronic and physical monitoring requirements.
  • The role is primarily on-site in State College, PA, with potential hybrid work arrangements depending on project needs.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary range of $68,604 to $102,900 per year, depending on qualifications, experience, and applicable position grade.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Robust retirement benefits and retirement planning options.
  • Generous paid time off, including holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
  • 75% tuition discount for eligible employees, spouses, and children.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and exposure to advanced research, engineering, cybersecurity, high-performance computing, and cloud technologies.
  • Mission-driven work supporting challenging scientific, engineering, and technology initiatives for government and research customers.
  • Potential hybrid work flexibility based on project requirements and manager approval.
