The Department of Neuroscience at the Perelman School of Medicineat the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a ResearchAssociate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointmentwill be initially for one (1) year and continuation during thattime period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance andavailability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Expertise isrequired in the specific area of neural development, axon guidance, neuronal specification, or neural circuit assembly; experienceworking with Drosophila and/or mouse model systems; a strongbackground in molecular genetics, genomics, transcriptionalregulation, and developmental neuroscience; demonstrated ability toconduct independent research and publish findings in peer-reviewedjournals; and excellent written and verbal communication skills.Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

Responsibilities may include designing and conducting independentresearch projects; performing molecular, genetic, genomic, andbiochemical experiments; analyzing and interpreting data; preparingmanuscripts and presentations; collaborating with laboratorymembers; and contributing to the broader scientific mission of thelaboratory.

The successful applicant will have an opportunity to develop andlead studies focused on the mechanisms controlling axon guidanceand neuronal specification during nervous system development inboth fly and mouse models. Research projects will investigatetranscriptional and signaling networks downstream of the Frazzled(Fra) and Deleted in Colorectal Cancer (DCC) receptors that directneural circuit assembly and neuronal differentiation. These studiesaim to elucidate how receptor-mediated transcriptional programscontribute to the formation of functional neural circuits and howdisruptions in these pathways lead to neurodevelopmentaldisorders.

Candidates with experience investigating transcriptional networksregulated by Fra/DCC receptor signaling and their roles in neuralcircuit development are especially encouraged to apply. Suchexpertise will provide valuable contributions to ongoing studiesexamining the genetic and molecular mechanisms governing neuronalconnectivity and will support the candidate's development toward anindependent research career.
