Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Inc. is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to conduct routine and specialized tests using molecular, cell biology and biochemistry methods.

Under supervision of the principal investigator, you will perform assays, interpret results, and contribute to research progress. The role requires 1–3 years of related experience, a biology/biochemistry degree, and proficiency with MS Office.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, life sciences or related field is required.
  • 1–3 years of related work experience is required.
  • Experience with computer systems including web-based apps and MS Office is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and non-routine lab tests including molecular techniques.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Assess reliability and accuracy of results; repeat procedures as necessary.
  • Assist with planning research procedures and coordinating tests.
  • Prepare written/verbal reports and present findings when required.
  • May train others and assist with ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Contribute to abstracts or papers; attend safety trainings and lectures.

Job description

Under limited supervision of the principal investigator, conducts a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests using molecular, cell biology and/or biochemistry techniques. Performs lab procedures with speed, precision, and understanding of theory behind tests and procedures. Performs Level II responsibilities with a higher level of problem resolution, analytical ability, self-direction, and expertise.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine and non-routine laboratory tests which may include DNA sequencing, gene cloning, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, northern blotting; synthesizes and interprets results. (essential)
  • May operate and maintain moderate to complex lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, flow cytometer, etc. (essential)
  • Using analytical abilities and sound judgment, makes decisions regarding the reliability and accuracy of results, repeating procedures when necessary. (essential)
  • May assist with planning specific research procedures and coordinating schedules of tests and procedures. (essential)
  • May prepare written and/or verbal reports on status of research and the technical procedures used, including statistical and graphic summaries of findings and possible conclusions. May review and proof papers and make informal presentations. (essential)
  • May have technical expertise in specific area(s) that surpasses basic performance expectations (i.e. knowledge/use of the electron microscope), contributes to the laboratory by utilizing this experience and uses an advanced level of problem resolution. (essential)
  • Under the direction of the principal investigator, may be responsible for and participate in general operation of the research laboratory. This may include the training of lab techniques to others in the lab, the ordering of common supplies, and the maintenance of equipment. (essential)
  • May be involved in preparation of abstracts or papers. (essential)
  • Attend Medical Center lectures regarding all safety requirements/conditions. Attends courses, lectures, and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consults with other researchers and technicians to exchange information. (essential)
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Life Science or a related scientific field required.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.

Social/Environmental Requirements:

Work requires periods of close attention to work with out interruption. Concentrated effort of up to 4 hours without break may be required. Work routine is fairly consistent, but employee needs to be able to use judgment to respond to events several times a week. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions: Daily: Exposure to dust, gas, fumes, steam r chemicals, protective equipment required. (Respirator, earplugs, mask, gloves, eyewear, etc). Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or airborne pathogens, Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or bloodborne pathogens. Several times a week: Extreme cold(below 32 degrees)-Cold Room. Several times a month: Radiation-irradiator possible. Health Care Status: NHCW: No patient contact.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department. Sensory Requirements: Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual monotony, Visual clarity <3 feet, Monitoring Equipment, Background Noise. Physical Requirements: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the hospital campus. This job requires endurance, working up to 5-6 hours without a break, frequent sitting, standing, fine manipulation using both hands, keyboard use.

Pay Range:

$24.04 - $36.06 The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
