Responsibilities

• Monitor sample quality and escalate issues.

• Maintain inventory and assist with ordering supplies.
• Follow safety procedures and keep a clean lab.
• Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, OSHA and quality requirements.

Job Title: Research Assistant II - Molecular Biology Division: Human Genome Sequencing Center Work Arrangement: Onsite only Location: Houston, TX Salary Range: FLSA Status: Exempt Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Summary

The Research Assistant II performs laboratory procedures supporting high-throughput genomic sequencing and research operations within the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC). Under general supervision, this position executes molecular biology workflows, maintains laboratory quality standards, and supports the generation of high-quality genomic data for research and clinical sequencing programs. The Research Assistant II is expected to work independently on routine laboratory procedures while contributing to continuous process improvements and collaborative team initiatives.

Job Duties

• Perform molecular biology techniques including DNA and RNA extraction, nucleic acid quantification, quality assessment, normalization, library preparation, and sample pooling.
• Execute laboratory workflows supporting high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) production using established standard operating procedures.
• Prepare reagents, buffers, and laboratory materials while maintaining accurate documentation.
• Operate laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including automated liquid handling systems and sequencing support equipment.
• Perform routine equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting within established guidelines.
• Monitor sample quality and identify issues requiring corrective action or escalation.
• Accurately document laboratory procedures, quality control results, and sample information using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and electronic laboratory records.
• Maintain sample identity and chain of custody throughout laboratory workflows.
• Assist with quality assurance activities by reviewing quality metrics and following established corrective and preventive action procedures.
• Maintain laboratory inventory, monitor reagent usage, and assist with ordering laboratory supplies.
• Follow laboratory safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment.
• Comply with institutional policies and applicable regulatory standards, including CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory quality requirements, as applicable.
• Collaborate with laboratory scientists, bioinformatics personnel, project managers, and operations staff to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
• Assist with implementation of new laboratory methods, technologies, and workflow improvements.
• Train and provide guidance to Research Assistant I staff and new laboratory personnel on routine laboratory procedures.
• Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
• Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
• Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
