Job Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Research Assistant II position is responsible for providing technical research support. Work could be performed in either a laboratory or office environment. Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), this position assists scientists, both independently and collaboratively, with investigative procedures. The Research Assistant II performs various assays, imaging experiments and other technical duties to assist with research activities and may be required to work with animal models and/or human subjects.

The Antibody Discovery and Accelerated Protein Therapeutics (ADAPT) lab is looking for a Research Assistant II to contribute to research discovering and developing therapeutics for infectious diseases. Our lab uses proteomics, artificial intelligence/machine learning-enabled protein engineering, and directed evolution to fuel the discovery and development of vaccine antigens, protective antibodies, and other protein therapeutic platforms.

This role will support vaccine development and antibody discovery through LC‑MS/MS method development and application. It will contribute to advancing MS-based proteomics through hands‑on operation of instrumentation, development and execution of analytical workflows, and close collaboration with cross‑functional scientists across research teams.

Responsibilities
  • Assist scientists under PI, conduct assays, imaging experiments, LC‑MS/MS method development, and other technical duties related to vaccine development and antibody discovery.
  • Operate instrumentation and execute analytical workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional scientists across research teams.
  • Follow technical instruction in setting up and conducting experiments, including biological assays, quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  • Operate laboratory and/or computer equipment and maintain records of all tests performed.
  • Tabulate inventory and maintain supplies and equipment.
  • Collaborate with PI’s and other research members to provide consistent research collection.
  • Maintain records of all tests performed and data collected.
  • Assist with implementation and education of department‑based safety initiatives, standards of practice and protocols.
  • Use resources efficiently, manage time effectively, and prioritize daily tasks.
  • Provide data and figures for manuscripts and grants.
  • Participate in the development or establishment of new laboratory and/or department procedures.
  • Seek opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies and complete an individual development plan.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in a related field.
  • Two years’ relevant research or academic experience.
  • Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies to safely perform the assigned job.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a customer‑service focused environment.
  • Works well in a team environment, as well as independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
