Job summary

Research Assistant 1 The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a Part-Time Research Assistant 1 to work in Miami.

Core Job Summary: The Research Assistant 1 contributes to research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. The Research Assistant 1 performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Sets up and operates various scientific apparatus and makes minor repairs.
  • Prepares correspondence and answers phones.
  • Formulates and maintains bibliographies and completes applications and forms.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents.
  • Reviews and edits various materials for publication and prepares publication schedules.
  • Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Department Specific Functions:
  • Assist with ongoing NIH-funded research projects investigating the role of the gut–brain axis in opioid-associated comorbidities, including pain, neuroinflammation, and microbiome dysbiosis.
  • Participate in laboratory techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, ELISA, tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, microbiome sample preparation, and molecular biology assays.
  • Assist with animal studies involving mouse models of opioid exposure and pain-related behaviours under supervision and according to IACUC guidelines.
  • Support microbiome and metabolomic studies through stool and tissue sample collection, data organization, and basic bioinformatics analysis.
  • Perform literature reviews and assist in preparation of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts related to gut microbiome, neuroimmune interactions, and opioid research.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, organise research data, and participate in weekly laboratory meetings and research discussions.
  • Collaborate with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty investigators in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Core Qualifications:
