Job description

Computer Vision Engineer – Image Science and Computer Vision Department, Applied Research Laboratory (ARL), Penn State

This position involves designing, developing, and deploying advanced computer vision systems for defense, law enforcement, security, and other critical applications. Projects will include object detection, tracking, recognition, and scene understanding on geospatial data.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, and report on computer vision algorithms to enhance analytic capabilities.
  • Integrate multi‑source data with modeling tools to associate real‑world objects with known signatures and doctrines.
  • Discover and capture information from geospatial data to represent events, systems, and discrete entities.
  • Conduct applied research from proof‑of‑concept to integrated production systems.
  • Provide technical guidance, report results, and foster trusted relationships with sponsors.
  • Collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Required Skills / Experience
  • Experiment design, analysis, and application of metrics to evaluate results.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, R, Java, C++, or MATLAB.
  • Strong communication skills to convey ideas effectively.
Preferred Skills / Experience
  • Experience in DoD/IC analysis or operational environments.
  • Familiarity with Git, open‑source scientific computing, computer vision, modeling, or machine‑learning tools.
  • Experience with high‑performance computing.
Required Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science.

Minimum 2+ years of relevant experience (intermediate) or 5+ years (advanced). No certifications required.

Background Checks / Clearances

Successful completion of a university background check, motor‑vehicle record check, and drug screen is required. Ability to obtain a government security clearance is mandatory. U.S. citizenship required.

Location

Full‑time on‑site position in State College, PA, with potential for hybrid work based on project needs.

Salary & Benefits

Salary range: $86,300.00 – $164,000.00 (geographic differential may apply).
