Position Objective

The Research Analyst will provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Cancer Institute, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics within the National Institutes of Health. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide support and expertise in programming languages including SAS, STATA, R, and Python
  • Perform data and statistical analyses including but not limited to cross-tabulation, sequencing data analysis, descriptive analysis using standard statistical procedures.
  • Conduct, maintain and bring projects to completion to include reviewing literature, create bibliographies; research methods in data analysis; revise study forms; graphically display analytic results.
  • Conduct and analyze large, complex databases in cancer epidemiologic studies including international consortia efforts. This includes but is not limited to data manipulation, algorithmic implementation, statistical programming, and integrated analyses. 5
  • Perform data management including data transfer between software, dataset creation including merging and or concatenation, data cleaning identifying and correcting data entry errors and/or missing values, and data transformation create and categorize variables and input data; create databases.
  • Coordinate and participate in meetings and conference calls between PIs, contractors and collaborators, includes taking and posting minutes.
  • Draft and review contract and material/data transfer agreements with various vendors and collaborations.
  • Assist with tracking of samples shipment, clinical data, project expenses and budget formulation.
  • Organize visitors’ schedules and scientific meetings.
  • Monitor and maintain records of study progress, sample status, and publications.
  • Review scientific literature and collaborate with expert biostatisticians in the Division and extramurally to help guide analyses.
  • Research and review literature to retrieve targeted clinical or scientific information from publicly available resources, such as PubMED and other databases.
  • Help prepare PI’s site visit material.
  • Participate in scientific manuscript writing and editing.
  • Draft and review contract and material/data transfer agreements with various vendors and collaborations. 1

  • Monitor and maintain records of study progress, sample status, and publications. 4
  • Prepare reports, charts, tables, and graphs, using software such as PowerPoint, R or Excel that can be used for scientific monographs, book chapters, scientific review and professional presentations including poster and oral presentations.
  • Help NCI investigators with scientific writing or editing drafts of manuscripts for publication, compile references, prepare material for journal submission, maintain interactions with co-authors, and submit manuscripts.
  • Learn and implement new analytic methods in accordance with principal investigators’ analytical goals.
  • Work products and documents relating to project management, epidemiologic cancer research support, data management/analysis, and coordination/administrative functions including assisting with tracking of project expenses, sample status and shipments, and monitoring and maintaining records of study progress and publications; organizing visitors’ schedules and scientific meetings
  • Work products and documents relating to statistical programming and analytic deliverables including complete a statistical analysis; organize, maintain and bring projects to completion; provide descriptive analyses using standard statistical procedures and model building; research and review literature to retrieve targeted clinical or scientific information from publicly available resources; perform data analysis, compile and communicate results to investigators.
  • Work products and documents relating to scientific reporting and communication products including prepare charts, tables, and graphs for presentations; help PI for site visit preparation; prepare articles for journal submission and correspondence to related staff or scientists; complete technical writing including co-authoring articles for journal submission.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, biobehavioral health, biology, or a related field.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in project management and technology transfer working with contracts, materials/data transfer agreements.
  • Advanced research experience in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, biobehavioral health, biology, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated through leading or coauthoring publications
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), experienced with citation management programs (eg EndNote) - Advanced skills in R programming language
  • Skilled in Statistical Analysis System (SAS), Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Photoshop
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) amendments and continuing reviews, Cooperative research and development agreement (CRADAs), Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, Material Transfer and Agreements (MTAs), and Human Subjects Research Protection
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
