Job summary

Hearst Television is seeking a Reporter with the ability to generate story ideas, write for video, and deliver compelling live shots. The role requires enterprise reporting, fast field work, and the energy to lead newscasts.

You will be accountable for ethical standards and must be willing to work on‑site in fast‑paced conditions. The ideal candidate will have 2–5 years of reporting experience, strong writing, and the ability to develop trusted sources.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of past reporting experience.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to work varied shifts, including overnights and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive large vehicles.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Equivalent military training from DINFOS and related experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Works with and guides reporters and producers in newscast production.
  • Regularly plans, gathers and assembles stories on day‑of news or special project assignments.
  • Gathers and edits compelling video and captivating sound, with or without a photographer.
  • Develops a network of sources to break stories of significance and provide tips.
  • Contributes pictures, video and text updates to mobile platforms throughout the day.
  • Juggles multiple stories and projects, meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Maintains journalistic integrity and ethical standards.
  • In‑person attendance is required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KSBW 8 (NBC) / Central Coast ABC / Estrella TV Costa Central, part of Hearst Television, is looking for a Reporter with the ability to generate story ideas, write to video, and deliver compelling live shots. We are seeking a strong, take‑charge reporter who can hit the ground running every day. We value strong enterprise reporting and are looking for someone who finds the stories that lead newscasts. You will bring the energy of live reporting to our anchor desk. In addition to credibility, poise, and personality, you must be fearless in heading out into the field to break big stories. We want this market's next leader who is not afraid to ask tough questions, hold those in power accountable, and develop sources. This versatile, enterprising self‑starter must be fast, efficient, work well under tight deadlines, and possess excellent live reporting skills. The role reports to the Managing Editor.

Responsibilities
  • Works with and guides reporters and producers in newscast production
  • Regularly plans, gathers and assembles stories on day‑of news or special project assignments
  • Works with or without a photographer to gather and edit compelling video and captivating sound
  • Coordinates with news managers and producers to develop stories that go beyond surface details, accentuate unique enterprise angles, and have exclusive content
  • Develops a network of sources who provide tips, early access to information, and allow the reporter to break stories of significance
  • Will contribute pictures, video and text updates to mobile platforms consistently throughout the day
  • Can juggle multiple stories and projects at once, demonstrating exceptional time‑management skills by meeting all deadlines under extraordinary pressure
  • Unwavering journalistic integrity and ethical standards
  • In‑person attendance is required
Requirements
  • Past reporting experience (2‑5 years) required
  • Demonstrated ability to enterprise and uncover
  • Your demo reel should be indicative of your everyday work
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills
  • Ability to operate mobile transmission devices and use the latest technology
  • Can work in all weather conditions and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Has a valid driver's license, can drive large vehicles over long distances, and a clear driving record
  • Ability to work varied shifts, including overnights and weekends
  • Can deal with the stresses and pressures of time‑sensitive newscast production
  • Bilingual a Plus
  • Equivalent military training from Defense Information School (DINFOS) and associated experience will be considered

The estimated base salary range for this role is between $50,000 and $55,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as transferable skills, work experience, business needs, market demands and conditions, including geographic location where the work will be performed, and other factors permitted by law. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
