Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication or related field or equivalent work experience.
• Three or more years of reporting experience, preferably in business journalism.
• Strong source development and ability to build a robust audience.
• Knowledge of news writing, ethics, accuracy, and story structure.

Responsibilities

• Break news on major employers, publicly traded companies, technology and energy in Colorado.
• Build and maintain relationships with CEOs, executives, investors, analysts, and officials.
• Cover earnings calls, SEC filings, M&A, and capital investments.

Job description

This position will be hybrid in the office/market four days per week.

The Denver Business Journal is seeking an ambitious and competitive reporter to cover some of Colorado's most important business sectors: major employers, publicly traded companies, technology and energy.

This reporter will own a high-profile beat that tracks companies, executives, trends and policy decisions key to shaping our state’s economy. This reporter will cover everything from the red-hot growth of AI and data centers to the region's thriving cluster of aerospace businesses and companies advocating for a business-friendly environment in Colorado.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable breaking news on earnings, layoffs, executive moves and funding rounds as they are producing deeply reported enterprise stories that explain the forces driving business growth and change.

Success in this role requires strong source development, a relentless focus on exclusives and a passion for helping readers understand how the region's largest employers and fastest-changing industries affect the business community.

To adeptly break news in these areas, the ideal candidate will have familiarity with SEC filings and public records. They will also be able to find and report on news businesses aren’t prepared to promote.

• Break news on major employers, publicly traded companies, technology firms and energy companies across Colorado.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with CEOs, executives, investors, analysts, entrepreneurs, government officials and industry experts.
• Cover topics such as earnings reports/calls, SEC filings, mergers and acquisitions, capital investments, workforce trends, facility expansions, layoffs and leadership changes.
• Identify emerging trends in technology, energy, innovation and corporate strategy before competitors.
• Develop enterprise stories, profiles and trend pieces that provide context and analysis beyond daily news coverage.
• Use public records, data and financial documents to uncover stories and support reporting.
• Consistently meet deadlines while managing a demanding and fast-moving beat.
• Use networking events, social media platforms and other community-building outlets to expand and fortify a source base and audience.
• Attend newsgathering activities, interview opportunities and events in the community as needed.
• Collaborate with editors, staff photographer and events team on special reports, awards programs, panel discussions and live events.
• Participate in social media to extend the reach of coverage.
• Work collaboratively with other newsroom staffers to maximize the impact and accessibility of stories reported.
• Meet or exceed goals related to audience engagement.
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Three or more years of reporting experience, preferably in business journalism.
• Proven experience and motivation for building and maintaining an active audience and a strong source base.
• Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics, accuracy and story structure.
• Proven excellence in reporting and writing, balancing daily and long-term assignments.
• Desire and ability to break news and to identify newsworthy events and sources.
• Strong analytical and investigative interviewing skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online.
• Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors.
• Knowledge of business principles is essential.
• Denver community experience is a plus.
• Comfort with on-stage or on-camera presentations is helpful.
• Proficient with MS Office Products.
• Proficient with Web-Based Communication Platforms (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.).
