Position

Texas Security General is seeking a Renewal Underwriter to join our growing team in San Antonio, TX. The Renewal Underwriter will review renewal insurance applications and assist with new business applications to evaluate, classify, and rate individuals and groups for insurance, and accept or reject applications.

Responsibilities

• Examine documents such as application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps, and medical reports to determine risk factors.
• Review company records to determine the amount of insurance in force and evaluate the possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance.
• Underwrite renewal accounts, ensuring all required information is obtained according to carrier guidelines; complete applications, confirm quotes, issue policies promptly and accurately, make state filings where applicable, and ensure taxes are paid.
• Secure payments on risks bound or written.
• Assist the Underwriter/Broker with the review, analysis, and underwriting of renewal and new business, rate accounts for premiums and terms, analyze exposures, issue written indications, quotes, and binders.
• Use inspection companies to obtain information and quote rates.
• Work with retail agency customers to develop business, cultivate relationships, and grow the book of business.
• Utilize binding authorities or broker risks when necessary to successfully negotiate placements.
• Assist the department with overall underwriting results, coding on required forms, and maintaining a keen awareness of priorities.
• Provide guidance and training to processors and assistants, review indications, quotes, binders, submissions, and policies for completeness and accuracy.
• Coordinate with the Department Leader before underwriting or brokering unusual coverages or manuscript forms.

Licenses & Certifications

• P&C State licensed.
• Pursue CIC or CPCU designation.
• Thorough familiarity with applicable ISO manuals, forms, rating plans, policy forms, coverages, exclusions, conditions, and terms.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) desired or five years of insurance experience, including at least two years as an underwriting assistant.
• Proficient with MS Office.
• Exceptional telephone demeanor.
• 1‑3 years’ experience with excess and surplus lines underwriting agency or company.
