The Safe Sisters Circle is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free culturally specific, holistic, and trauma-based services to Black women survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault primarily living in Washington, DC's Wards 7 and 8.

Position Description

The Safe Sisters Circle is currently seeking survivor-centered and culturally competent applicants for a non-legal survivor advocate internship opening with our organization. The Survivor

Advocate Intern will support the work of The Safe Sisters Circle’s mission of providing culturally specific, holistic, trauma-informed services on behalf of survivors. We are looking for a highly motivated, passionate and thoughtful individual who is committed to the work of advancing the legal interests of Black women survivors of intimate partner abuse. This internship will be a primarily virtual position, but applicants should be for occasional in-person events and outreach efforts in the District of Columbia.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position reports to the Acting Executive Director of The Safe Sisters Circle;

  • Conducts client intake interviews and performs client assessments;
  • Keeps accurate records as necessary for case management and statistical documentation;
  • Maintains client files and assists with general case and document management services;
  • Coordinates advocacy needs, information, and referrals to holisitic services for survivors;
  • Assists clients with safety planning and crisis intervention;
  • Participates in the organization’s community outreach efforts in Washington, DC’s Wards 7 and 8;
  • Participates in the organization’s educational resource development; and
  • Other tasks may be assigned.
Qualifications

We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues, gender-based violence, and/or intimate partner abuse;
  • Survivor-centered focus, with an interest in issues impacting Black women survivors;
  • Ability to interact sensitively with traumatized populations and to handle crisis appropriately;
  • Trauma-informed and culturally competent advocacy skills;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving approach to concerns and challenges;
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills with a keen eye to details;
  • Proficiency in data collection and reporting;
  • Strong time management and organizational skills;
  • Ability to take direction and accept constructive feedback;
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in team environment; and
  • Commitment to the mission, vision and values of the organization.
Education & Experience

Enrollment in an accredited college or university or recent graduate. Open to undergraduate and graduate level students, with preferred studies in pre-law; social work; psychology; criminal justice; or closely related field of study. However, internship is open to any student regardless of major/field of study with relevant experience or specific training in trauma, intimate partner violence, and/or sexual assault.

As part of this internship, you will have to complete a training intensive (no charge to you) prior to beginning to work with clients.

Interns are requested to commit to at least a six-month internship and a minimum of 10 hours a week. Internships are unpaid; however, The Safe Sisters Circle may be able to assist you in obtaining academic credit if provided with the required documents. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis
