Job summary

Bowman Consulting seeks a Structural Engineering Senior Manager to lead the structural engineering function for the unit with remote work from Reston, VA. You will oversee staff, drive project execution, and ensure client satisfaction while growing the firm's capabilities.

The role requires 15+ years in structural engineering, SE/PE credentials preferred, and a proven record in leadership, budgeting, and business development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in structural engineering or related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Licensed Structural Engineer (SE) preferred.
  • 15+ years of relevant structural engineering experience including PM, staff supervision and client relationships.
  • PE license preferred.
  • Experience with STAAD, Microstation, AutoCAD, MDX and LEAP.

Purpose

Responsible for leading the structural engineering function of assigned business unit.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Receive broad guidance from senior-level management relating to overall key objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and general parameters for execution. Manage people and processes to ensure effective execution. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.
  • Provide oversight and direction of department or business unit including strategy, budgeting, staff, and deliverables.

At The Operational And Company Level

  • Coordinate with other internal departments to meet project requirements.
  • Act as advisor to engineering team regarding projects, tasks, and operations.
  • Market the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.

Do the Work

  • Hire, train, retain, and develop engineering staff.
  • Oversee all projects in the department to ensure that the work is executed on time and on budget and in accordance with the client's requirements and within company policies and procedures.
  • Provide work assignments and review performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
  • Serve as technical advisor by providing senior level input and evaluation on projects.
  • Develop and evaluate criteria for project plans.
  • Write proposals and price projects for review by management.
  • Approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Verify specifications for use in engineering design and development.
  • Review status reports, recognize and address discrepancies.
  • Perform field investigations or inspections.
  • Serve as liaison with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
  • Assist with the marketing of the firm's capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships with existing clients.
  • Keep current on engineering specifications, trends and developments to recommend changes in program or design methods.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in structural engineering or related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Licensed Structural Engineer (SE) preferred.
  • Fifteen or more (15+) relevant experience in structural engineering to include project management, staff supervision and leadership, and client relationships.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications and design software such as STAAD, Microstation, AutoCAD, MDX, LEAP etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully managing the financial, marketing, human resources and operations aspects of an engineering department.

Salary and eligible variable compensation (if any) commensurate with experience. Range $122,000 - $158,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Partially indoor professional office environment which may exposure to include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Partially outdoor work environment which may include exposure to adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Frequent and prolonged use of data collection equipment and/or drones, necessitating walking the assigned study area to complete data collection over the course of several hours.
  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
