Job summary

Smart Working is seeking a Senior PHP/Symfony Engineer to own backend development within a mature Symfony platform handling enterprise marketing and revenue data. The role is remote-first, with cross-functional collaboration across engineering, product, QA and DevOps.

You will upgrade from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7, work with Angular/TypeScript and Python AI microservices, and maintain strong architectural and security practices in a high-autonomy, remote team.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience, including 5+ years in PHP.
• 3+ years of Symfony 6.x/7 experience.
• 4+ years of backend system design and scalability.
• 2+ years of using AI tooling to review and critique outputs.
• 5+ years of MySQL experience; PostgreSQL depth acceptable.
• 1+ year of Angular/TypeScript awareness.
• 3+ years of PHPUnit or equivalent testing experience.
• 1+ year of framework upgrades and legacy-code modernization.
• 2+ years of AWS experience (Azure/GCP possible).
• Fluent written and spoken English.
• Ability to work UK hours and pass background checks.
• Architect mindset with hands-on technical approach.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver backend work in the Symfony core app, working independently within 2–3 months.
• Critically assess code from the team and AI tools, challenging proposed solutions.
• Help move the application from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7 and resolve blockers.
• Improve performance, scalability and maintainability for new features.
• Collaborate with Angular front end, TypeScript and Python AI services, and DevOps.
• Read and reason about Angular/TypeScript code; frontend skills not required.
• Identify gaps in code and AI output; challenge solutions and root causes.
• Deliver maintainable solutions in a legacy codebase with steady pace.
• Work with high autonomy in a remote cross-functional squad.
• Respect SOC 2, PII and security controls.
