Job summary

UnitedHealth Group, through UnitedHealthcare, seeks a Medical Director of Clinical AI Innovation and Performance. This senior physician leads clinical AI model training, testing, and surveillance for utilization management criteria, leveraging InterQual and custom content.

You will guide annotation, training, and governance across AI-enabled UM decision support to ensure safe, effective care at scale. The role reports to UCS and collaborates with Medical Policy, Data Science, and UM leadership.

Qualifications

• MD or DO with active/unrestricted U.S. medical licensure.
• Board certification in an ABMS/AOBMS clinical specialty.
• Significant experience in utilization management and coverage interpretation.

Responsibilities

• Lead clinical annotation and analysis supporting LLM-based UM decision support.
• Oversee the clinical review process to ensure accurate interpretation of UM criteria by AI.
• Collaborate with Medical Policy, UM Operations, and AI/data science teams to align policy intent with criteria.
• Manage clinical annotators and UM analysts supporting AI-enabled workflows.
• Provide clinical oversight and judgment on complex or evolving criteria.
