Job summary

Sunflower Services is seeking a bold, relationship-driven Managing Director of Business Development to shape the next chapter of growth for a nonprofit ecosystem providing fiscal sponsorship. The role demands strategic insight, senior leadership, and a track record of high-value partnerships across the social sector.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in business development, strategic partnerships, or client advisory roles within or adjacent to the social sector.
  • Experience with fiscal sponsorship - how it works, who the key players are, and how organizations use it strategically.
  • Track record of building and closing complex, multi-stakeholder relationships, preferably in professional services or consulting.
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more focus areas for nonprofit partners (climate/environment, reproductive freedom, democracy/advocacy, gender equality).
  • Experience managing, influencing, and developing teams in a highly matrixed environment.
  • Experience working with or alongside 501(c)(3) and/or 501(c)(4) organizations, foundations, or philanthropic intermediaries at senior levels.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus.
  • Demonstrated success in generating new business activity.
  • Exceptional communication skills—presenting, writing, and negotiating with clarity and influence.
  • Established presence and credibility in innovative parts of the social sector ecosystem.
  • Collaborative leadership style with high emotional intelligence and comfort navigating complex relationships.
  • Entrepreneurial energy, bias toward action, and ability to thrive in ambiguity.
  • Humility and a sense of humor

Responsibilities

  • Shape and advance Sunflower’s multi-year growth strategy with partners and owners.
  • Build and manage a pipeline of business aligned with ecosystem priorities and revenue targets.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to funders and project leaders on fiscal sponsorship opportunities.
  • Represent Sunflower as a thought leader at conferences, publications, and sector forums; create compelling ecosystem content.
  • Analyze market trends to inform strategy and identify new service opportunities.
  • Cultivate channel partners and referrals to expand Sunflower’s reach and reputation.
  • Develop and sustain long-term relationships with funders and strategic partners.
  • Collaborate with Presidents and senior leaders to align priorities and identify opportunities.
  • Diagnose client needs, design solutions, lead scope and fee negotiations, and ensure value delivery.
  • Provide leadership to internal teams to support sustainability and growth.
