Job summary

The Law Offices of the Public Defender in Santa Fe, NM is seeking a Legal Associate to provide support to attorneys in a legal setting, including determining need-based eligibility for representation and drafting legal instruments.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and two years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence.
• Two years of experience conducting legal research and maintaining a case management/tracking system.
• Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience totaling two years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Determine applicant eligibility for representation and act as liaison for attorneys to maintain communication between attorneys and clients.
• Draft legal instruments and assist in document preparation.
• Prepare correspondence and conduct some investigative tasks.
• Assist attorneys in difficult situations, identify and describe legal problem areas in consultation with a staff attorney.
• Utilize web-based programs such such as case management/tracking system.
