Job summary

National Renewable Energy Laboratory seeks an Associate/Undergraduate Intern to support community air quality monitoring initiatives in Kern County and the San Joaquin Valley. The role involves applied research, developing educational resources, and evaluating low‑cost sensors within existing networks.

You will gain exposure to data collection, analysis, and reporting while collaborating with cross‑functional teams in a fully remote setting.

Qualifications

  • Associate: GPA 2.7+; enrolled in accredited associate-degree program.
  • Undergraduate: GPA 3.0+; enrolled full time in a bachelor’s degree program.
  • Post‑Undergraduate: Bachelor's degree earned within past 12 months; GPA 3.0+; eligible for up to one year internship.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
  • Fields of study: engineering, environmental science, chemistry, energy systems, sustainability, public health sciences, data science, applied mathematics, or related.

Responsibilities

  • Research and synthesize best practices for community air quality monitoring networks.
  • Review existing air quality monitoring programs in California and Kern County.
  • Support development of configurations for integrating KernCCD-hosted low-cost sensors with existing networks.
  • Assist with environmental data collection, analysis, and presentation.
  • Help develop community science and educational materials.
