Job summary

FirstLight seeks an experienced Fiber Construction Engineer to manage initial design, permitting, and material procurement for fiber networks. The role requires coordinating with design, construction, and NOC teams across multiple projects from home base with fieldwork in PA.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years of industry experience, strong knowledge of fiber construction and splicing, and proficiency with GIS and MS Office. Travel is required to support field operations.

Qualifications

• Requires Associate and/or Bachelor’s degree in engineering or telecommunications or equivalent.
• 5 years of relevant telecommunications experience is acceptable.
• Equivalents considered for education and experience.
• Strong business acumen and experience managing large telecom construction projects.
• Extensive knowledge of fiber construction processes and best practices.
• Experience with fiber splicing and testing processes.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with stakeholders at all levels.
• Proficient with GIS and MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint).
• Willingness to travel as needed to manage field operations.

Responsibilities

• Travel to customer locations to collect fiber optic project information and determine equipment needs.
• Prepare preliminary OSP and ISP designs and provide data for Fiber Engineering.
• Complete Mop forms with customer signatures for field access.
• Participate in meetings to plan backbone, lateral, and riser fiber builds.
• Develop partnerships to forecast timelines and updates with stakeholders.
• Build strategic relationships to secure service contracts for FirstLight.
• Oversee construction phases with internal teams or contractors, ensuring safety and timelines.
• Coordinate with NOC, Field Ops, and Fiber Design to align documentation.
• Update Team/PMs promptly on issues affecting timelines or budgets.
• Procure equipment and materials and generate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Conduct site inspections and address discrepancies for efficient material acquisition.
