Job summary

Thurston County Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) is hiring an Environmental Health Specialist I to implement and enforce environmental health regulations, protect public health, and support county water-quality monitoring. The role involves field inspections, investigations of complaints, and data management, with duties extending to emergency response when needed.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in environmental health or related field and at least one year of public health

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in environmental health, biology, bacteriology or related field.
• One year of professional environmental health work experience requiring extensive public contact.
• Current Washington State driver's license or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

• Enforce the Sanitary Code related to water quality concerns.
• Investigate, sample, evaluate, and act on pollution or contamination complaints.
• Conduct sanitary surveys and dye tests on onsite sewage systems.
• Document inspection results and prepare enforcement documentation.
• Communicate findings to property owners and the public.
