Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist for the Altoona District Office to provide rehabilitation services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. You will assess needs, plan instruction, and guide clients toward independence and safe mobility in home and community.

Responsibilities include developing personalized instruction, selecting travel aids, providing individual or group lessons, monitoring progress, and offering counseling to families.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Orientation and Mobility Intern program or ACVREP certification or a degree with practicum.
• Educational requirements may be met within 3 months of graduation.
• Experience with rehabilitative services for visually impaired individuals is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assessment duties: assess customer needs by reviewing reports, interviewing individuals, and observing daily functioning to create an instructional plan.
• Instruction planning: develop personalized instruction schedules aligned with rehabilitation goals.
• Equipment selection: choose and recommend travel aids and assistive technology based on customer readiness.
• Skill instruction: provide individual or group lessons that build safe travel techniques and independence.
• Progress monitoring: track customer skill growth and determine whether instructional goals are met.
• Support services: offer counseling and guidance to reinforce skills and support families.
