Job summary

Metis Associates is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Research Assistant for an entry-level position focused on education and family well-being. You will work with senior researchers on qualitative and quantitative tasks across client projects, contributing to written deliverables and supporting presentations.

You will gain foundational skills in applied research, with guidance from experienced colleagues, and collaborate with a team to deliver high-quality results remotely, while NYC staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, education, public policy, or a related field.
  • 1–2 years of work experience in a research or evaluation setting (education- or health-focused preferred).
  • New York City area resident strongly preferred.
  • Foundational knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods; experience collecting and analyzing qualitative data strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with SPSS, Qualtrics, or Canva is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within a professional research setting.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with development of research protocols under guidance from senior staff.
  • Conduct interviews and focus groups with youth, students, and parents.
  • Assist with site visits and field observations.
  • Apply basic qualitative coding techniques to research data.
  • Conduct literature reviews and produce written synthesis of ideas across sources.
  • Track weekly survey counts and assist with basic online surveys.
  • Research existing surveys with high validity and reliability for project needs.
  • Perform basic data manipulation in SPSS.
  • Run and interpret basic descriptive statistics in SPSS with guidance.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail when reviewing data outputs.
  • Contribute to written client deliverables following established outlines and structures.
  • Assist with preparing presentation materials under senior staff guidance.
  • Communicate professionally with colleagues and clients.
  • Create data visualizations with support and feedback.
  • Manage 1-2 smaller projects with guidance.
  • Attend client project meetings and take notes.
  • Interact with clients in a professional, helpful manner.
  • Complete deliverables on time and with high quality.
  • Support research on potential clients aligned with target areas.
