Job summary

County of El Dorado seeks a Deputy Attorney for the Alternate Public Defender’s Office in Placerville, CA. This role provides high‑level legal representation across criminal defense and related civil matters, with opportunities to influence policy and multi‑agency coordination.

The selected candidate will perform full-scope legal duties, represent the County in trials and hearings, and mentor junior staff. CA Bar admission and 5+ years of practice are required.

Qualifications

• Doctorate (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in the California State Bar.
• Five years of professional legal experience as a licensed attorney, preferably in the assigned area (criminal prosecution, public defense, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Perform the full range of routine to complex legal activities.
• Represent the County in moderate to high-profile and multi-jurisdictional matters, including trials, hearings, and appeals.
• Lead negotiations, mediation, and resolution of cases with significant financial, operational, or policy impacts.
• Serve as a subject-matter expert and provide technical direction on specialized legal projects and mentorship.
• Draft and review legal documents.
