Job summary

Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a C-BRAIN Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain the data infrastructure powering our AI Biomedical Research Scientist platform.

You will ingest data, harmonize multi-modal datasets, and manage cloud resources to ensure analysis-ready data for AI tools and researchers. The role collaborates with the CTO and data science teams, emphasizes software engineering discipline, version control, and data governance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Three years of hands-on data engineering experience with pipelines/ETL/ELT in production or research.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP acceptable).
• Experience with complex multi-source datasets requiring integration, harmonization, and quality validation.
• Strong software engineering with version control and automated testing; auditable code.
• Experience with neurodegeneration or Alzheimer’s research datasets (NACC/ADNI).

Responsibilities

• Designs, builds, tests, and maintains scalable data ingestion pipelines from diverse sources.
• Develops ETL/ELT workflows using Spark, dbt, Airflow; pipelines are robust and auditable.
• Implements automated pipeline monitoring and troubleshooting; ensures data quality and lineage.
• Collaborates with CTO and researchers to translate data requirements into pipeline specs.
• Maintains data infrastructure, access control, and cost/performance monitoring.
• Supports de-identification workflows and secure data delivery for AI tool development.
