Job summary

Optum AI, part of UnitedHealth Group, is expanding with Research Interns for Summer 2027 to advance AI/ML in healthcare. You will work on state-of-the-art models and collaborate with world experts to improve patient outcomes.

Remote work is available nationwide in the U.S.; in Minneapolis or Washington, DC, in-office four days per week is required where applicable. Salary ranges from $85,000 to $125,000 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• PhD candidate in ML/AI/CS or related field.
• Experience implementing/training ML algorithms or statistical analysis.
• Strong mathematical foundations in ML.
• Familiarity with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Proficiency in Python, R, Java, C++, or MATLAB.
• Legally authorized to work in the US without restrictions.

Responsibilities

• Perform research advancing the state of the art in AI and ML.
• Implement algorithms and evaluate their performance on healthcare data.
• Communicate results across an interdisciplinary team and explore use cases that improve real-world healthcare outcomes.
• Document research internally and externally, including publications in ML conferences and journals.
