Job summary

This position is based at Abbott Laboratories in Buffalo Grove, IL, within the Diabetes Care manufacturing site. You will sustain and improve automation equipment, lead preventive/predictive maintenance programs, and drive reliability through data-driven improvements.

You will manage spare parts, coordinate with OEMs, and mentor teammates while helping reduce downtime and increase first-pass yields in a fast-paced facility that values safety and operational excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years in engineering, project management, or operations.
  • Experience in maintenance, reliability, manufacturing, or facilities engineering.
  • Knowledge of preventive & predictive maintenance and reliability principles.
  • Familiarity with CMMS software and maintenance planning systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of safety regulations and maintenance standards.
  • Working technical knowledge of engineering concepts and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Manage spare part inventory and restocking with parts management.
  • Oversee obsolete parts, replacements, and documentation reviews.
  • Coordinate equipment upgrades with OEMs.
  • Develop reliability projects to reduce downtime and improve yield.
  • Identify maintenance deficiencies and work with TPM to improve them.
  • Plan and execute small- to mid-sized engineering projects.
  • Conduct data analysis, present findings, and recommend improvements.

The Opportunity

This position works out of our Buffalo Grove, IL location in the Abbott Diabetes Care division where we are focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life‑changing products that provide accurate data to drive better‑informed decisions. We’re revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.

This role is specific to a Reliability / Maintenance engineering discipline. With the primary purpose of sustaining the automation equipment at a large manufacturing site.

What You’ll Work On
  • Managing spare part inventory levels for assigned equipment family. Identify stock out conditions and work with the parts management team to expedite restocking.

  • Overseeing identification of obsolete parts, identifying replacements, and completing all engineering reviews, documentation and validation.

  • Managing equipment upgrades working closely with equipment OEM's.

  • Through reliability reviews, develop continuous improvement projects to reduce unplanned down time, and increase first pass yield.

  • Identifying preventive maintenance deficiencies and work with TPM to enhance them.

  • Identify spare parts that are eligible for refurbishment and work with the approved refurbishment contractor to have the part repaired.

  • Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs.

  • Monitor equipment performance and recommend reliability improvements.

  • Plans and conduct small- to medium-sized assigned projects within engineering specialty requiring conventional types of plans, investigations, and/or equipment.

  • Maintains a good understanding of customer, business, and technical considerations, incorporating into work/project scoping and planning.

  • Estimates and coordinates resources needed (materials, budget, time, and people) to accomplish assigned tasks, incorporating contingencies.

  • Participates in basic economic analysis and feasibility studies related to project alternatives with support.

  • Independently executes the design of products/processes/equipment /systems/facilities using standard engineering theories, concepts, and techniques within the discipline.

  • Independently investigates, conducts tests or experiments, gathers data, and performs preliminary analysis, reports findings and communicates recommendations to a variety of stakeholder audiences.

  • Creates/modifies designs for intermediate problems, including designing and modifying more complex components/processes, and writing detailed design specifications.

  • Reviews and analyzes data for patterns/trends, seeing relationships of growing complexity among the data, drawing insights, and making recommendations to pursue opportunities and/or solve problems.

  • Conducts root cause analysis to resolve underlying problems, applying a customer‑centric lens to identify needs and propose solutions/alterations to meet those needs.

  • Implements improvements to methods, designs, and processes, proactively sharing and adopting ideas and best practices to reduce cost and optimize efficiencies/effectiveness. Communicates to a variety of stakeholders using formal and informal media, based on the needs and priorities of the audience.

  • Builds open, honest, collaborative with a network of colleagues, contractors, and vendors by developing an understanding of others’ needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments.

  • Mentors others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance within the team and to cross‑functional partners

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or closely related discipline is desired or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Additional post graduate education may contribute towards the desired years of experience.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in engineering, project management, and / or operational experience.

  • Experience in maintenance, reliability, manufacturing, industrial operations, or facilities engineering.

  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, and reliability engineering principles.

  • Familiarity with CMMS software and maintenance planning systems.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.

  • Understanding of safety regulations and maintenance standards.

  • Possesses a working technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional certifications such as CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) or CMRT (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician).

  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.

  • Experience with PLCs, automation systems, robotics, or industrial controls.

  • Experience with vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, or other predictive maintenance technologies.

  • Has a technical background in health care, nutritional products, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical, or similar industries
