Job summary

East Kentucky Power Cooperative in Winchester, KY, is seeking an Engineering professional at LEVEL 1 to provide engineering services and support to the assigned group under supervision. The role emphasizes learning, applying engineering knowledge, and developing reports and work plans.

Hybrid Remote Schedule

This role has the option to be a blend of remote and onsite work if department and business needs allow and with approval from direct supervision. Our hybrid remote work schedule combines three (3) days on premises with up to two (2) days remote.

The following levels are open for consideration: Engineer I, II, III and Senior.

All skill levels are being considered and the person chosen for the position will be placed in the level in which they are experienced. Please see below for description of all levels.

Key Roles

LEVEL 1

To assist in providing engineering services and support to assigned group. Works under direction of more senior individuals in work group. Willingly accepts range of assignments, subject to checks and verification by more expert team members.

Key Responsibilities

LEVEL 1

All Specialties

• Under direct supervision, develops reports and work plans which recommend action considering short and long-range objectives, economic and budget considerations, etc.
• Under direct supervision, develops and coordinates individual project work plans and manages through completion taking needed corrective action. Informs supervisor and manager of any major developments or changes in direction of the project.
• Assists with status report for all work assignments and keeps management informed on progress.
• Assists with preparation of estimates (cost, work order, schedules).
• Analyzes data and makes recommendations and/or decisions.
• Maintains technical records (e.g. drawings, files, databases).
• Gains awareness of all relevant procedures, specifications, and applicable codes, regulations, compliance rules, and standards (e.g. RUS, etc.).
• Gains technical expertise and awareness of job-related field, and remains current on the industry.
• Works with other team members and supervisors in carrying out assignments.
• Under guidance, provides engineering assistance for Member Cooperatives.
• Assists with the creation of corporate standards and specification related to respective expertise.
• Develops working knowledge of sound engineering practices and standards.
• Performs all work in a safe and timely manner.

Reliability & Technical Support

• With significant assistance, provides engineering and technical support to Power Delivery Maintenance field personnel for issues related to substation and transmission line maintenance.
• With significant assistance, accumulates, analyzes, interprets, monitors, and reports data on the overall operations and performance of the electric power delivery system and develops recommendations for improvement.
• Assists with internal outage reporting process to ensure all outages, both sustained and temporary, are investigated or evaluated in a timely manner and initiates appropriate follow-up activities.
• Completes investigation reports for substation and transmission line outages with significant assistance.
• With assistance, communicates with owner-member engineering and operations departments to identify and answer concerns related to events or outages.
• Assists with the development and recommendation of improvement opportunities that enhance overall operations and performance of the electric power delivery system.
• Manages lower-level maintenance capital projects for substation and transmission line equipment with significant assistance.
• Assists with the preparation of construction requirements and contracts for maintenance-related substation and transmission line projects, including material specifications.
• Assists with internal asset management program for substations and transmission lines, including the submission of problem statements for consideration by Engineering & Construction personnel.
• Assists with management of internal online equipment monitoring and power quality programs for substations and transmission lines.
• Assists with the improvement of existing substation and transmission line equipment designs using electric power delivery system performance and RUS data with all safety codes in consideration.
• Assists with engineering and technical services to owner-members related to event analysis, power quality, power supply, and electric and magnetic fields.
• Assists with the development and upkeep of internal maintenance policies and procedures for the operations and maintenance of substations and transmission lines.
• Participates in the management and improvement of EKPC¿s unmanned aerial vehicles (or drones) program for detailed substation and transmission line inspections.
• Develops awareness and maintains working knowledge of all relevant ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NEMA, NESC, NERC, and RUS standards along with other applicable procedures and specifications.
• Develops awareness and maintains working knowledge of utility maintenance practices.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Requirements

LEVEL 1

Education and Certifications / Licenses: Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program required. Based upon EKPC's business needs, a specific discipline may be determined. Civil Engineering degree is preferred.

Experience: No experience required.

• Experience in technical writing in an engineering field preferred.
• Previous power systems education preferred.
• Obtains FAA Part 107 license.
• Demonstrates creativity and logical thinking when working on specific objectives to engineer solutions.

Working Conditions

LEVEL 1

• Usual office conditions with frequent field visits, which include but are not limited to working in and around substation and line construction environments where environmental demands include: dust, noise, fumes, rough/uneven terrain, extreme temperatures, etc.
• This position often works at heights.
• Regularly lifts up to twenty (20) pounds; occasionally lifts up to fifty (50) pounds.
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Travel in and outside of the electric power delivery system will be required; travel may be overnight.
• Work outside of normal business hours may be required. Subject to emergency call-in.
• Must wear personal protective equipment as appropriate.
