Job summary

Shermco Industries, Inc. is seeking a Protection and Controls Technician to install, commission, test, and maintain protective relay and telecommunication systems. The role requires experience with SEL/GE/ABB relays and RTUs in HV substations for utility clients.

The candidate will review test reports, interpret diagrams, and travel extensively to client sites. A strong background in protection and control, plus NERC CIP familiarity, is preferred.

Qualifications

• Ideal candidate will have 5+ years experience in electrical testing with protection and control equipment.
• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related discipline, or technical schooling or military electrical experience.
• Experience with transmission and distribution relays including SEL/GE/ABB/Westinghouse.
• Experience with substation RTUs, communication processors, and telecom equipment for brownfield and greenfield projects.
• Experience with scoping, scheduling, budgeting for protection and control projects.

Responsibilities

• Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relay equipment and related systems.
• Perform functional testing for protection circuits in transmission lines, HV bus, transformers, breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitors.
• Upgrade RTUs and telecom systems for clients; review and report test results for regulatory purposes.
• Interpret single-line and wiring diagrams and identify discrepancies.
• Complete time and expense reports; maintain company vehicle in good condition.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities and Expectations:

• Installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relay equipment, powerline carrier equipment, digital fault recorders (DFR’s), remote terminal units (RTU’s), and communication processors.
• Functional testing for protection and control circuitry associated with transmission lines, HV bus, transformer, circuit breaker, feeder, reactors, and capacitor banks.
• RTU and telecom upgrades for various clients
• Experienced with SEL microprocessor relays such as 311C, 311L, 387, 411L, 421, 487B, 487E, 487V, 587, 587Z, and 787.
• Desired experienced with GE microprocessor relays such as C30, D60, F35, L90, T35 and T60.
• Required experienced with various RTU’s and communication processors such as GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, and Novatech.
• Accurately reviewing, documenting, and submitting test reports used for client reporting and regulatory purposes.
• Interpret one line, three line, wiring, schematic diagrams, communication configurations with ability to recognize and bring attention to discrepancies.
• Accurately completes time and expense reports along with maintaining good condition of assigned company vehicle.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience:

• Ideal candidate will have 5+ years experience in the electrical testing industry with a focus working with protection and control equipment, RTU’s, and telecom with HV utility, co-op, power generation, federal, or municipal clients.
• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Technology in similar discipline, or Technical school diploma, or military experience in either Army Prime Power or Navy Nuclear electrical program.
• Experience with transmission and distribution relays to include SEL, GE, ABB, and Westinghouse.
• Experience with substation RTU’s, communication processors, and telecom equipment for both brownfield and greenfield projects.
• Experienced with scoping, scheduling, and budgeting process for protection and control, RTU, and telecom projects for both internal and external entities.
• Experience with project management of protection and control teams working in HV substations for utility clients.
• Familiar with NERC CIP requirements.

Requirements:

• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, stand for extended periods, drive regularly, with or without reasonable accommodations
• Should be able to pass a fit for duty physical exam when required
• Pass pre-employment drug test, and periodic unannounced drug tests
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check with 7 year history
• Have a valid drivers license and meet minimum motor vehicle insurability standards
• Take and pass 30 hour OSHA training
• Ability to work in a field environment subject to changing outdoor conditions
• Work overtime as needed and willingness to travel extensively to client work locations
• Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
