Job summary

Duke Energy offers qualified students in accredited engineering tech programs the opportunity to work in an internship focused on relay construction and maintenance across our footprint in Indiana and Ohio. The program supports the Relay Construction and Maintenance group responsible for protecting relays and SCADA systems while ensuring grid reliability.

Responsibilities include learning relay fundamentals, reading prints, understanding RTS and NERC compliance, and developing troubleshooting

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an Engineering Technology or related program.
• Must be at least 18 years old before start date.
• GPA minimum 2.75 to qualify.
• Must not graduate before August 2027.

Responsibilities

• Learn fundamentals of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, and SCADA.
• Develop basic isolation procedure writing.
• Study print reading and red mark process.
• Understand RTS and its use in operations.
• Comply with NERC data accuracy and timeliness requirements.
• Build basic troubleshooting skills.
• Organize activities in logical order.
• Gain understanding of CT and VT circuits.

Duke Energy offers qualified students, in accredited engineering programs leading to an Associate Degree, the opportunity to work in areas related to their field of study as part of an internship program.

The Relay Construction and Maintenance department executes the design packages developed by the Transmission Engineering department for the construction of substation and transmission facilities throughout the Duke Energy service area. This department is also responsible for ensuring grid reliability by executing the day-to-day operations and maintaining the protective relays and SCADA control systems in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

• Develops understanding of the fundamentals of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, distribution SCADA, communications


• Develops basic isolation procedure writing


• Develops understanding of how to utilize print reading, red mark process


• Develops understanding of RTS and its use


• Develops understanding of NERC compliance and importance for accurate data and timely completion


• Develops basic trouble shooting skills


• Develops the ability to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order


• Develops basic understanding of CT and VT circuits

Basic/Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled and pursuing a four or two-year degree in Engineering Technology or a related major


• At least 18 years of age prior to beginning employment with Duke Energy


• Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75


• Valid driver’s license


• Must not graduate prior to August 2027.

Desired Qualifications

• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher


• Students must have completed 12 credit hours with specific courses: Introduction to Electrical Utilities, Electrical Utility Print Reading, Physics/Trig for Relay Technicians, Introduction to CAD

Work Conditions

• Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.


• Reliable, consistent transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the applicable facility.


• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and pass a pre-employment drug test


• Depending on work location, may be required to meet requirements for unescorted access/security clearance


• Exposure to mechanical, electrical, noisy and/or other hazards


• Exposure to Carrier and Tone equipment


• Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, appropriate clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.), as needed


• Ability to lift 50 pounds


• Ability to work at heights and from suspended work platforms


• Required to work in all areas of the power plant
