Job summary

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
• At least 16 semester hours of doctoral level coursework in biology, chemistry, medical technology (MT), clinical laboratory science (CLS), or medical laboratory science (MLS).
• An approved thesis or research project in biology/chemistry/MT/CLS/MLS related to laboratory testing for disease or health assessment.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership for the ART laboratory and supervise qualified personnel.
• Establish and oversee laboratory policies, standards and procedures with Medical Director and leadership.
• Oversee daily lab operations and perform procedures as needed to support patient care.
• Ensure testing methods are scientifically valid and clinically relevant.
• Develop and oversee quality management and quality assurance programs.

The University of Kansas Health System, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is seeking a full-time Embryology Lab Director who will join the team and support the departmental mission of delivering the highest quality of care, as well as satisfying teaching, research, and academic responsibilities at the region's quaternary referral center.

The Embryology/ART Laboratory Director will provide leadership and oversight of the operational, technical and scientific functions of the embryology, andrology and phlebotomy laboratories. The Director will assume responsibility for and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and institutional standards. As a member of the clinical faculty, the director participates in education and supports the ongoing research and academic mission of the University of Kansas Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Director is expected to work in a highly collaborative manner with all clinical, educational and research partners.

Job Duties

• Provide overall operational, administrative, technical, and scientific leadership for the ART laboratory and advise Division leadership regarding qualified laboratory personnel.
• Establish, implement, and oversee laboratory policies, protocols, standards, and procedures in collaboration with the Medical Director and applicable leadership.
• Oversee daily laboratory operations and perform laboratory procedures and testing as needed to support patient care and operational needs.
• Ensure laboratory testing and treatment methods are scientifically valid, clinically relevant, and appropriate to patient and program needs.
• Develop and oversee the laboratory's quality management and quality assurance programs, including quality control, proficiency testing, quality improvement, corrective actions, and annual program review.
• Monitor laboratory performance and ensure accurate, timely, and medically reliable results, documentation, and communication of laboratory data.
• Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and institutional requirements, including timely reporting of federally mandated ART data to SART and CDC.
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate laboratory personnel; ensure staff maintain required competency, licensure, certification, and continuing education. Oversee the training and professional development of embryologists.
• Provide consultation to physicians and other clinical staff regarding laboratory aspects of patient treatment and management.
• Oversee selection and evaluation of laboratory equipment, methods, reagents, reference laboratories, and other resources to ensure quality, safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
• Ensure laboratory facilities, equipment, environmental conditions, and information and record-management systems meet applicable safety, confidentiality, regulatory, and institutional requirements.
• Coordinate and participate in regulatory and accreditation inspections and self-assessments; review findings and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
• Support education and research activities related to reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) and participate in educational programs for medical and laboratory staff.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution OR
• Hold an earned doctoral degree; and Have at least 16 semester hours of doctoral level coursework in biology, chemistry, medical technology (MT), clinical laboratory science (CLS), or medical laboratory science (MLS); or
• An approved thesis or research project in biology/chemistry/MT/CLS/MLS related to laboratory testing for the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of any disease or impairment of, or the assessment of the health of, human beings.

Certifications

• Board certified by an HHS-approved board, required
• HCLD certification, required

Work Experience

• 2 years' experience in laboratory training
• 2 years of laboratory experience directing or supervising high complexity testing
• Have at least 20 CE credit hours in laboratory practice that cover the director's responsibilities, required upon hire
