Job Overview

The Rehabilitation Therapy Technician (RTT) performs routine habilitative and rehabilitative therapy work in state supported living centers that serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. The RTT assists the habilitation/rehabilitation supervisor by providing hands‑on assistance to individuals for an assigned therapeutic specialty, such as supported employment job coaching or vocational rehabilitation and vocational/day programs.

Essential Job Functions
  • Attends work on a regular basis; may be required to work specific shifts, rotating schedules, extended shifts, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Prepares materials for assessments using data from prior assessments and assists in conducting assessments as directed.
  • Accompanies individuals to and from activities and appointments when required.
  • Prepares materials for therapeutic activities and maintains an adequate supply of materials.
  • Performs housekeeping duties in therapeutic activity areas as instructed.
  • Provides assistance to individuals for an assigned therapeutic specialty through hands‑on methods.
  • Performs direct contact observations and completes observation notes.
  • Collects data related to treatment plans as instructed.
  • Provides feedback to the interdisciplinary team about the individual’s progress, works with Direct Support Professionals (DSP) to maintain a connection and assists with the development of treatment plans for the assigned discipline.
  • Provides treatment goals that are feasible for the team to implement and are in the best interest of the individual.
  • Maintains current skills in relation to assigned responsibilities.
  • Participates in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) activation as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Some knowledge or ability to gain knowledge of relevant therapeutic techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Experience or ability to gain experience in the use of equipment, tools, and materials used in therapeutic activities.
  • Ability to assist in the development of treatment and support plans.
  • Ability to collect data for an assigned therapeutic specialty (e.g., music therapy, therapeutic recreation, dance/movement therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, or vocational rehabilitation).
  • Ability to utilize personal computers and relevant software.
  • General knowledge or ability to gain knowledge of ICF-IID regulations and State Supported Living Center policies and procedures.
  • Ability to meet the same physical requirements as those for direct contact staff positions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Registrations, Licensure and Certifications

Valid Texas driver’s license or the ability to obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out‑of‑state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED or previous employment.
  • Experience working or volunteering with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or performing therapeutic work is preferred.
  • Experience aiding therapists conducting a therapeutic specialty is preferred.
Additional Requirements
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities.
  • Males between the ages of 18 and 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; position may require overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment.
