Job summary

University of Central Oklahoma is seeking Writing Center Peer Tutors to provide in-person tutoring for student writing and multimodal projects. Tutors support brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising and proofreading to enhance understanding across courses.

Applicants should demonstrate excellent English reading/writing, strong communication skills and confidentiality. Enrollment in ENG 4723/5723 is preferred, with a flexible schedule 8am–7pm, 5–20 hours/week.

Qualifications

  • Excellent reading, writing and speaking abilities in English.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time (Fall/Spring) or minimum credit hours for Summer as described.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with written or multimodal assignments, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading.
  • Communicate ideas effectively; be personable and patient.
  • Attend monthly Writing Center meetings.

Job description

Position Overview This is a regular student tutor position which will provide in-person academic tutoring to students while maintaining an effective and positive learning environment.Hours per Week
  • 5 – 20 hours per week.
  • Flexible schedule between 8am – 7pm, Monday – Friday.
College/Department OverviewCollege of Liberal Arts, Department of English.Department Specific Job FunctionsWriting Center Peer Tutors will assist UCO students with written or multimodal assignments, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading, to support student comprehension and learning in a wide variety of courses. The peer tutor must be personable and be able to communicate ideas effectively to others. The peer tutor must have great communication skills, patience, and be able to work a flexible schedule. Confidentiality is required. Attendance at monthly Writing Center meetings is required.Enrollment RequirementsFall/Spring Semesters: All student employees must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half-time enrollment for fall/spring semesters is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. International students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible to work as a student employee. Full-time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.Summer Semester: Student employees working regular student positions must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to be eligible to work during the summer. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in fall classes in order to work during the summer, but they (and the department) will be required to pay FICA taxes. Student employees working FWSP positions must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours (if undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (if graduate) in order to work during the summer in a Federal Work Study Program position.Enrollment Exception: If the number of credit hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum number of hours required for student employment, the student must obtain a letter from their Academic Advisor (stating the number of hours needed to graduate and anticipated graduation date) and submit it to Human Resources.   • Applicants should have excellent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English as well as strong critical thinking skills.
  • Selected peer tutors are required to have completed or be enrolled in ENG 4723/5723 Composition Pedagogies (may apply the same semester as concurrently enrolled in said course).
