Job description

Overview

Banfield aspires to be a practice where, as a team, we make a positive impact on pet health care in hospitals, communities, and the field of veterinary medicine. We believe hiring people with diverse perspectives, ideas, and cultures allows us to deliver the highest quality preventive care. As a Banfield Registered Veterinary Technician, you will work alongside pet health care industry experts to make a difference in the lives of the pets and clients we serve. With the chance to utilize your veterinary knowledge, communication skills, and love for pets, this role offers a clear career path for continued growth and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Actively recruit new clients by promoting hospital services, Optimum Wellness Plans, preventative care, and pet health needs.

  • Manage routing the flow of clients and pets to ensure superior client care and maximize productivity of the veterinary medical team.

  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times: welcoming clients and pets, ensuring they are comfortable, educating them about their pet’s health, performing or preparing procedures that do not require veterinarian assistance, completing preparatory work for other procedures, and monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets.

  • Upon approval from the supervising veterinarian, perform veterinary technician appointments under the direction and supervision of the veterinarian and in compliance with state law.

  • Assist incoming clients by completing required documentation, entering pet information and history into the computer, using proper collars and tags for identification, and ensuring prompt service.

  • Assist outgoing clients by providing necessary instructions, information and invoices, dispensing prescription items per the veterinarian’s instructions, selling retail products, and scheduling future appointments.

  • Manage finances by maintaining accurate balances and following proper opening and closing procedures.

  • Act as the extra eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarian to ensure the best quality pet care, maximize the veterinarian’s productivity, and maintain patient flow.

  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.

  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and keeping treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs clean, sterile, and organized.

  • Assist with surgery as applicable.

  • Train and mentor new paraprofessional associates.

  • Quality check medical records, return-to-home medications, regulatory documentation, hospital cleanliness, and timeliness of doctors seeing exam room patients.

  • Utilize technical skills to the fullest within state practice acts regarding the duties of credentialed veterinary technicians.

  • Conduct administrative functions as necessary.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Assist the Practice Manager in developing an efficient, productive hospital team that provides the highest quality care and service.

  • Support the Practice Manager in hospital labor management, selection, training, and day-to-day supervision of the paraprofessional team.

  • Assist in creating an environment where the team delivers quality, efficient, and effective veterinary care.

  • Provide effective communication between associates, clients, hospital leadership, and Central Team Support.

  • Ensure all hospital associates adhere to Banfield dress and grooming guidelines.

  • Prepare the whole team on scheduled cases, assist with transfers of cases, triage the treatment board, and identify potential bottlenecks to improve medical operations.

  • Confer with field leadership and assist with client resolution decisions, invoice adjustments, and client experience exceptions.

  • Address equipment issues and assist in inventory management.

Qualifications

  • Veterinary Technician Certification or Licensure (CVT, RVT, LVT, LVMT).

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program (preferred).

  • Strong commitment beyond qualification: passion for pets, dedication to client and pet experiences, and adoption of the Five Principles-Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency, and Freedom.

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Career Development

  • Performance Development Plans (PDP) to define and achieve career goals.

  • Practice-paid continuing education opportunities and attendance at partner conferences.

  • Free membership to NAVTA, practice-paid subscription to VetFolio, and a 50% discount for VetGirl.

  • Opportunities to serve local communities and shelters.

  • Pathways to grow into leadership roles at field and practice level.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Generous retirement plans (401(k) and Roth) with company match.

  • Student debt relief program for full-time DVMs.

  • Paid time off and holidays.

  • Top-tier mental health and wellbeing resources, including free coaching and counseling.

  • Associate life insurance (company-paid) and supplemental life insurance options.

  • Company-paid short-term and long-term disability.

  • Flexible spending account (FSA) and health savings account (HSA).

  • Paid parental leave for birth and adoption.

  • Continuing education allowance for eligible positions.

  • Back-up child and elder care and family support resources.

  • Fertility and family-building support.

  • Digital exercise therapy program.

  • Voluntary protection benefits at the employee’s option.

  • Legal plan providing access to a wide range of legal needs.

  • Identity protection service.

  • Commuter benefits.

  • Three free Optimum Wellness Plans for pets.

  • Exclusive discounts on products and services.
