Position: Veterinarian Technician

Position Purpose

The Veterinarian Technician provides excellent veterinary care to Vetco Total Care hospital patients and exceptional customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Technician represents the mission and values to all clients and partners and helps set the tone for the technical and customer support team. All hospital partners are responsible for fostering cohesion and motivation within the hospital teams.

Essential Job Functions

The incumbent must be able to perform all duties with or without reasonable accommodation:

• Greet clients and patients, obtain weight and vital signs, document in the electronic medical record, and record a thorough patient history.

• Assist veterinarian with appointments (routine and emergency), surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision of the veterinarian and hospital leadership.

• Perform patient restraint, handle laboratory samples, dispense medications, and maintain the electronic medical record.

• Schedule appointments, educate clients, relay test results, maintain inventory and client/patient records, and manage accounts receivable.

• Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, monitor during recovery, and discharge or transfer as needed.

• Provide in-hospital treatments for sick patients including injectable and oral medications, intravenous therapies; keep patients clean, hydrated, and fed as directed; walk canine patients for elimination when needed.

• Participate in training of new staff and dissemination of knowledge as required.

• Maintain a neat and clean hospital environment; perform regular cleaning per need and maintenance schedule.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

• Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed.

Nature of Supervision

A Veterinary Technician takes direct supervision from veterinarians as well as the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty. For overall supervision, direction comes from the Hospital Office Manager.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no immediate supervisory duties.

Education/Experience

• College or college-equivalent education required to become a Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state where the hospital is located.

• At least 1 year of experience as a Veterinary Technician or in a veterinary practice.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Compassionate, professional demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.

• Strong telephone and computer skills.

• Team player willing to learn new techniques, offer ideas, and adapt to change.

Work Environment

Most duties are performed in the Vetco Total Care full-service hospital. The role includes bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. Significant time is spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.
