Registered Veterinary Technician – Petco

Join Petco’s full-service veterinary hospital as a Registered Veterinary Technician and help our patients receive the best care, while delivering excellent customer service to pet parents.

Position Purpose

The Veterinary Technician represents the mission and values to all clients and partners. The Veterinary Technician sets the tone for the technical and customer support team in the hospital, and is responsible for fostering cohesion and motivation within the hospital partners.

Essential Job Functions
  • Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments or walk-ins, escort into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs, and record all in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist the veterinarian with appointments (routine and emergency), surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, taking direct supervision from the veterinarian(s) and the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty.
  • Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the direction of the veterinarian, and maintain the electronic medical record.
  • Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results, manage inventory and accounts receivable.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, provide anesthetic monitoring, and manage recovery, discharge, or transfer to overnight care as needed.
  • Administer injections, oral and intravenous medications, keep patients clean and safe, and walk canine patients when necessary.
  • Participate in training of new staff members and disseminate knowledge.
  • Maintain a neat and clean hospital environment and perform regular cleaning as scheduled.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Provide backup phone and front‑desk support as needed.
Education / Experience
  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state where the hospital is located.
  • At least 1 year previous experience as a Veterinary Technician or veterinary practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassionate, professional demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • Team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments.
Work Environment

The majority of duties are performed in the full-service hospital. The job requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 lb) and standing for long periods. A large amount of time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

Salary Range
