Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Respiratory Therapist for per diem shifts to provide comprehensive respiratory care in a collaborative hospital setting.

The position requires an AS in Respiratory Care, NBRC RRT credential, MA license, BLS, ACLS (within 3 months), NRP and PALS (within 3 months), and at least two years of acute care experience. A signing bonus may be available and eligibility will be confirmed during interview.

Qualifications

• Associate of Science in Respiratory Care is required.
• Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential (NBRC).
• Massachusetts State Respiratory Care License is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 3 months of employment.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) within 3 months of employment.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 3 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Works as part of a team to ensure optimal patient care.
• Reviews patient electronic medical records for history and current orders.
• Administers aerosolized medications.
• Draws and analyzes arterial blood gases and reports critical values.
• Consults with physician staff on therapy choices and communicates recommendations.

This position is responsible for providing all aspects of respiratory therapy in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Respiratory Care Department. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex patient care in all assigned areas. The respiratory therapist provides evidence-based patient focused care in a collaborative environment.

• Works as part of a team to ensure optimal patient care.
• Reviews patients electronic medical record for appropriate history, reason for admission, pertinent laboratory/radiological data, current orders.
• Administers aerosolized medications.
• Draws and analyzes Arterial Blood Gases. Reports Critical Values per hospital policy.
• Consults with physician staff concerning the most efficacious forms of therapy and makes recommendations to enhance patient care (such as type, method, duration of therapy, suggested medications/dosages) compatible with physician orders and communicates these effectively with appropriate members of the healthcare team.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education: Required:

• Associate of Science in Respiratory Care.
• Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
• Current Massachusetts State Respiratory Care License.
• Current Basic Life Support Certification.
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (required within 3 months of employment).
• Current Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certification (required within 3 months of employment).
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification (required within 3 months of employment).

License/Certification/Education: Preferred:

• Bachelor of Science or higher.
• Specialty credential issued by the NBRC (ACCS, SDS, NPS, or RPFT).
• Current AE-C (Certified Asthma Educator) Certification.

Experience/Skills: Required:

• Ability to assess patients and make appropriate therapeutic recommendations along the continuum of care from admission to discharge including all aspects of respiratory care from floor therapies to mechanical ventilation and blood gas interpretation.
• Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.

Preferred:

• Minimum two (2) years of acute care experience.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
