Job summary

FlexStaff is seeking a Respiratory Therapist to perform comprehensive respiratory assessments, provide therapy per physician orders, and educate patients and families on respiratory care. The role includes managing ventilators, conducting pulmonary tests, and collaborating with physicians to optimize care in a hospital setting.

The incumbent will adhere to infection control and safety protocols while contributing to equipment maintenance and department operations.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Certificate of completion from an accredited respiratory therapist program.
• Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LIC-RT) in NY State and/or Connecticut.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (CER-RRT) NBRC.
• Advanced and Basic Life Support certification.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive respiratory assessment.
• Utilize assessment data to identify problems.
• Conduct bedside pulmonary function studies as ordered.
• Collaborate with physicians on care plan.
• Evaluate patient responses to respiratory care.
• Deliver care using a defined process.
• Provide respiratory therapy education to patient/family.
• Complete departmental paperwork and assist inventory control.
• Perform chest therapy techniques to mobilize secretions.
• Assist in Pulmonary Stress Testing as needed.
• Perform standard suctioning and collect specimens.
• Implement ventilator management and weaning protocols.
• Provide bronchial hygiene and airway care procedures.
• Collect blood for gas analysis and notify physicians.
• Monitor and adjust non-invasive ventilation and gas exchange.
• Support transport of ventilated patients with airway devices.
• Administer oxygen and humidification per orders and policy.
• Respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies per ACLS/BCLS.

Education

Certificate of completion from an accredited respiratory therapist program

Bachelor’s Degree, preferred

Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LIC-RT) in NY State and/or Connecticut

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs comprehensive respiratory assessment and respiratory therapy as prescribed by a physician. Provides patient/family with respiratory therapy education. Prepares, operates and maintains respiratory test/care equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs comprehensive respiratory assessment.
2. Utilizes assessment data to determine patient’s actual or potential problems.
3. Performs bedside pulmonary function studies as per physician’s order.
4. Collaborates with physicians on patient’s plan of care.
5. Evaluates patient’s responses to respiratory care.
6. Utilizes a process in delivering care to assigned patients.
7. Provides patient/family with respiratory therapy education as ordered.
8. Completes departmental paperwork as specified for each assignment completed and assists with inventory control.

• Performs physical chest therapy (cupping) to loosen and mobilize secretions and mucus in the lungs and clears airway blockage in the patient’s respiratory system, as needed.
• Assists in Pulmonary Stress Testing, when necessary.
• Performs standard suctioning techniques as indicated, collecting the appropriate, requested specimens.
• Implements ventilator management/weaning protocols.
• Performs bronchial hygiene and airways care procedures.
• Collects blood for PH gas analysis, notifies physicians of results and performs appropriate changes in ventilator parameters.
• Implements, monitors, and maintains non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Monitors gas exchange via non-invasive measures including pulse oximetry and capnography.
• Assists in the transport of mechanically ventilated patients with artificial airways.
• Administers oxygen and humidification therapy as per physician’s order and department policy. Initiates, monitors and adjusts parameters on continuous mechanical ventilation.
• Responds to cardiopulmonary emergencies and renders care as per ACLS/BCLS standards.
• Provides emergent airway care including intubation, as per department policy.
• Implements ventilator management adhering to protocols as per department and Intensive Care Unit standards.

1. Adheres to established infection control protocols and fire safety protocols.
2. Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

1. High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
2. Certificate of completion from an accredited respiratory therapist program, required.Bachelor’s Degree, preferred.
3. Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LIC-RT) in NY State and or Connecticut, required.
4. Registered as a Respiratory Therapist (CER-RRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), required.
5. Advanced and Basic Life Support certification, required.
