Job summary

Henry Ford St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit, MI seeks a Respiratory Therapist for a 24-hour-per-week night shift (6:30pm–7:00am), including every other weekend and holidays.

Under supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, you will deliver life-support, diagnostic procedures, and medical gases therapy to ICU patients and other units. You will document care, supervise students and externs, and assist with patient billing.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
• Bachelors in Respiratory Therapy preferred; Associate of Science Degree mandatory.
• Recent graduate of a Respiratory Therapist program or at least two years of recent Respiratory Therapist experience in a tertiary hospital.

Responsibilities

• Delivers life-support, resuscitation, monitoring and various medical gas therapies primarily to ICU patients.
• Performs invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures for ICU and general practice units.
• Maintains clinical expertise for department assignments across HFHS.
• Communicates effectively with patients, co-workers, physicians and hospital staff about patient care needs.
• Adequately documents all aspects of patient care.
• Supervises, directs and delegates to respiratory orienters, externs and students as assigned.
• Completes necessary and accurate patient billing information.

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, delivers life-support, resuscitation, monitoring and various medical gases therapy primarily to critical care patients in the Intensive Care Units.
• Performs invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures to Intensive Care and General Practice Units patients.
• Maintains clinical expertise for Departmental assignments at various business units throughout HFHS, as assigned.
• Communicates effectively with patients, co-workers, physicians and other system employees as needed, regarding patient care needs.
• Adequately documents all aspects of patient care.
• Supervises, directs and delegates to respiratory orients, externs and students, as assigned.
• Completes necessary and accurate patient billing information.

Education/Experience Required

• Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
• Bachelors in Respiratory Therapy preferred; Associate of Science Degree mandatory.
• Recent graduate of a Respiratory Therapist school or at least two years of recent Respiratory Therapist experience in a Tertiary Hospital.

Certifications/Licensures Required

• Registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
• Current License - Respiratory Therapist in the State of Michigan. Newly graduated therapists must complete their registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care and obtain a State of Michigan Respiratory Therapist License within 90 days of graduation or risk termination.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Work performed in a patient care setting and blood‑analysis laboratories with potential exposure to communicable disease. Requires washing, cleaning, and disinfecting soiled medical equipment. Uses pressurized piped‑in and bottled medical gases. Improper lifting, moving, or use of equipment may result in injury to self, patient, or equipment. Must constantly move, lift patients, push patients on hospital beds, and haul heavy equipment across the hospital. Must tolerate limited noise, temperature fluctuations, and dust.
