Position Summary

Hilo Medical Center is seeking a Registered Professional Nurse IV – Assistant Nurse Manager/Educator to support the Intensive Care Unit and provide leadership in clinical education, staff development, and high-quality patient care. This role combines advanced nursing practice, staff supervision, education, and operational coordination to ensure the ICU team maintains clinical competencies and delivers safe, patient-centered care to critically ill patients across the adult and geriatric populations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead education and staff development: Develop, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate orientation, in-service education, competency programs, and ongoing professional development for ICU staff in alignment with applicable regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Provide and oversee clinical care: Assess patients, develop and implement nursing care plans, administer medications and treatments, assist with procedures, provide patient and family education, and ensure accurate and timely documentation.
  • Coordinate ICU operations: Function as charge nurse as assigned, coordinate staffing and patient assignments based on patient acuity and staff competencies, delegate responsibilities, and support the efficient use of unit resources.
  • Provide clinical leadership and mentorship: Serve as a subject matter expert and role model for nursing skills, procedures, equipment, and clinical practices while coaching, mentoring, and supporting staff development.
  • Promote quality and patient safety: Monitor compliance with nursing standards, infection prevention and safety practices, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements; identify opportunities for improvement and participate in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Support continuous improvement and collaboration: Collaborate with nursing educators, physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and hospital committees; stay current with nursing trends and evidence-based practices; and assist with evaluation of new equipment, policies, procedures, and clinical initiatives.
Education
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.
Experience
  • Minimum of 1½ years of professional nursing experience. Of the required one and one-half (1 1/2) year of professional nursing work experience, one and one-half (1 1/2) year of professional nursing experience working in an Intensive Care Unit is required. The required experience must have been gained within the past two (2) years.
  • Demonstrated supervisory aptitude or potential through leadership, team‑lead, supervisory, administrative, or related nursing responsibilities.
Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within one month of appointment.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within six months of employment or transfer into the position.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required within six months of employment or transfer into the position.
Licensure
  • Current, valid license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Hawaii required.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
